My votes go to the front body mount to frame bolts ,that hold the radiator support to the frame...you know, the ones that always have the big flat washer under the rubber cushion disintagrate from rot,and let the nose jump up every time you hit a bump..

On my '82 GMC,thats just what is going on,plus the inner fenders look more like swiss cheese ,all patched up with scabbed on galvanized tin,and no more rear inner fender to cab bolt too--the drivers side is the worst..the one that I need most,to mount the plow control valve on,of course..

I can litteraly pick up on the fender and the left side of the nose will lift up a good inch..no doubt plowing is rough on the body mounts, with all the impacts and sudden stops..no wonder it sounds like its coming apart going over rough roads...:doah:

I had wanted to try removing the nut on the bolt holding the radiator support to the chassis, but the thing is rotted so badly no socket will grab it,and about 2" of crusty threads protrude from the bolt's shank..it's partly blocked by the front spring hanger bracket too..

Cant get near it with a sawsall, grinder,or a nut splitter,if you use a torch the rubber cushions will burn and ruin things like wiring and maybe the radiator--and you cant even see the head of the bolt from above--no access to it I can see without taking the radiator off..

I'd at least like to get a new bolt & washers on it and get the nose to stay "tight" better...

It has been too long since I yanked a nose off one of these trucks to recall just how I had to do it..(most likely the bolts just sheared off on those trucks, all whittled down to 1/4" where they go through the rubbers..or the nose was easily pulled off because the rubber bisquits and washers rotted off !)

Other bolts I hate dealing with are the exhaust stud bolts, torque converter, and motor mount/ bellhousing bolts, but none of those are as difficult to access as the "nose" bolts..

Been thinking about swapping a "new" nose on the truck,if I can score one cheap--I saw one on CL awhile ago for 200 bucks with nice fenders, inners, and the grille and lamps all looked decent..but with my limited phyisical ability it'll be quite an undertaking, and I hate taking my only means of daily transportation apart for such major work.I fear I wont be able to finish it once I start--...but doing the nose as a whole would be quicker and easier than putting the fenders and inners on my existing radiator support piece meal..(which might have hidden rot too,so I think doing it in one whole piece is a better way... )..

Remove the grill...those body bolts go in from the front side of the core support through an oval hole in each upright above the mount. I know it's a can of worms...but the whole deal is a ton easier with the bumper off too.

Eww...:doah:
---that means I'd have to take the upper plow frame off,the grille wont come off with it in the way, tried that when I had to replace a leaky transmission cooler hose (aftermarket) thats mounted in front of the radiator last year--it sucked, but I was able to (barely) get my hand behind the grille after taking its screws off, without removing the plow lift frame assembly, and get the new hose on and the clamp tightened..

The more I look at this truck the less I feel its worth fixing at all.....

Ditto for my Suburban..started that thing up yesterday and though it did fire up quickly and still sounds "decent",looking at the holes I punched in the rockers under the doors when I went to get in it,made me want to vomit...

The thing was practically mint when I got it body wise back in '09--now it has no brakes, blown lines probably, tranny has issues losing reverse supposedly,(but works every time in my yard ?)...and it'll need a lot to be put back on the road again, the exhaust will be junk most likely..but underneath it still looks "new" compared to the pickup...The nose on it is pretty decent..so is the interior..but that's about all it has for good points..

Maybe it is time to move on,get something else--I dont know..:dunno:.getting sick of not having the health required to work on these trucks ,and always having doubt if your actually going to get to your destination and back when you go anywhere in them...parts aren't getting any easier to find or cheaper either..also having your "only" vehicle down sucks..your grounded, your freedom is taken away..
:(..
I'm getting too old for this s***...
I have a week of "perfect" weather to go outside and work on things, but feel like crap and don't even want to think about doing any of it...and soon it'll be dark at 4 pm,too cold and crappy outside to get anything done...I'm still trying to recover from lying under the truck all last week to fix the stupid exhaust ...

Well, replacing the front clip was gonna require dropping the plow frame and grill/bumper anyways...

Bell housing bolts.

Easy with a body lift. But those two always give me a hard time. Especially getting the one back in along with the tranny dipstick tab.

On a K5;

Rear gas tank strap studs (hidden by bumper)
Rear spring, rear hanger rivots / shackle flip bolts (hidden by gas tank)
Tailgate torsion spring frame bolts (hidden by bumper)

Any square body;

Rear spring, front hanger - nut on spring eye bolt

Brake booster bolts on firewall as well as steering column clamp on the firewall......especially when they are covered in seem sealer!!!

Oh that's a good one!!! The lower pass side brake booster one is a pain.

I've never thought it was too hard to get the front end off of these trucks, besides two bolts, the two under the front of the cab, that hold the bottom of the the fenders in. They both ended up snapping off, and being the biggest pain of the whole thing.

This was all accomplished in about 2 hours with nothing more than a socket set, a tree, and a come-along.

I'd say the worst bolts are either those under the cab, or, even though they aren't unique to a squarebody, the top two bell housing bolts.

Not sure if they count as bolts per-say but the mounting nuts for the heater box suck too.

Really no body for that one bolt for the heater box that you have to take the inner fender off for other wise it would be a 20 min job?

that one CAN be done with a 1/4 drive swivel.. can...

I'll go with the forward cab mount bolts... unless you live in Arizona or Cali, you can bet they'll be spinning in the cage under the floor usually...

Ever try to align the doors? Each side has one bolt that goes from behind the dash out through the body into the upper hinge. The PS sucks enough, but the DS requires you to remove the parking brake bracket, etc. You need to be a contortionist with X-ray vision.

What is this tranny dipstick you speak of? Never seen one of those on my SM465

My vote is for the bolts that the clutch pedal in...those suck

oh yeah :doah: how could I forget about that?

I was super surprised that the only one of mine that spun was the one behind the pass seat... :eek1:

This one gets me every time. That goddamn tranny dipstick tab has me cussing and yelling and throwing tools and the neighbors wondering wtf is wrong with me everytime. That one is my kryptonite.
