So where were at now is the truck will move under it's own power again, but the shift indicator is not matching up with the transmission-----P is R, R is neutral, neutral is drive etc. Also i can't manually shift into 1.

What could have caused this? The trans worked just fine before the engine swap. The only things i've changed were the tailshaft mount---was shot so i replaced with a polyurethane one.

And, when i put the engine in, the converter was not totally back into the trans. So it got stuck against the flexplate. i had to slightly jack the engine away from the trans and then i was about the move the converter back and then install the converter bolts.

Hopefully the front pump is not jacked.

i guess basically i want to know that IF the front pump is jacked, then how much time/miles do have before trans failure? i do plan to take the entire drivetrain out soon because it needs to come out anyways due to certain issues---i.e., the strut rod brackets need to come out because it is interfering with the starter front brace. But i'm trying to plan things out time/schedule/money wise.

Sounds weird that the strut rod is making contact with anything. That sound funny right there.

Other than that, it sounds like a simple shift linkage adjustment. Just play with the set screw on the linkage. That is probably why you can't hit 1st either.

The strut rod(s) themselves are not making contact with anything---it's the strut rod bracket that is interfering with the starter front brace. Brackets are sandwiched between engine and engine mount. The only reason i left them in is because i thought it would help center everything (this is a pre 85 truck and thus the holes for the 4.3 were not drilled in the frame----i had to drill them). But now that i think about it, we are only talking 1/8" if that much.

These strut rods apparently came on 4.3/th-400 equipped trucks. i'm running a th-350 so no place for the rods to attach to, and i'm not even sure why they are necessary? The th-400 in the above case had a thick aluminum dust cover where the strut rods would attach to. Again, not even sure why the rods were necessary in a 2wd truck?

Anyways, if the trans was working correctly before the engine swap, then i'm not sure why the linkage would now be out of adjustment?

The shifter adjustment bolt at the colum is just a rod pinched by a bolt,it could have slipped when you took the engine out and the trans sagged down a bit..

My pickup has a 6.2 diesel with a TH400,which was a supposedly rebuilt trans, but its not a 4x4 case,it is either a 2wd or car trans,so there is no place to bolt the strut rods too..it only has a tin cover over the converter..

I've plowed a LOT with this truck and dont treat it gently, and so far I haven't cracked the case on the trans--it still has the transfer case bracket to the bellhousing bolt ...
I wont say you don't need those braces, but in my experience they don't seem to be needed much--if I were off roading and getting it airborne, then yes,I'd say they are a must..

I would think you'd know right away if the front pump got damaged..it would at least make noises ..

Ok, i got underneath to get a better look. What had happened was the rod that comes out of the "shifter knob thing" on the driver's side of the trans actually came out of the hole of the bracket that mounts on the frame. This probably happened due to all the moving around of the engine and trans that i did not only trying to position the new engine correctly, but i also had to put in a new tailshaft mount.

So i put it back in and adjusted everything and i can now get into any/all gears. Now, the shift indicator doesn't match exactly to all gear positions, but i think it was like that before.

Hopefully, this takes care of this crisis. Next hurdle: exhaust.

Where the cable attaches to the column for the indicator is adjustable.
