York system, (update post #122)

I guess I was wrong about the check valve. I removed it from the system and it is doing the same thing.

Anyone know of any reason that the york would not be putting out air at idle? It is pushing air but only at about 5 psi. As I rev the engine it will build pressure proportionally with RPM but the pressure goes away as soon as I let the engine return to idle.

The way the system is set up know has the discharge going to a manifold and stopping there. The pressure gauge on the manifold is what I am using for indications.

Have you installed a one way check valve in the system? If not the system will not hold air pressure.

Yeah, Scott's right ... check valve is required to charge the tank up... otherwise the pressure from the thing will drop at idle, yeah.

BUT, it does sound like the thing's not putting out much oopmh.

Dumb, dumb question ... the clutch IS engaging right? Like when you put 12V to it, it clangs nice and shut, like you can hear it? You should also hear your engine load up a bit, like when you turn the AC compressor on.

Also, output is actually a function of the York's speed, not engine speed per se... I forget, in your case, is the York run off a V-belt from, say, the power steering pump, or ...? The question is one of the ratio of whatever the drive pulley is to the York pulley. In mine, I'm pretty sure the pulleys are above the same size, i.e. 1:1, so the York spins at the same speed as the engine. If your drive pulley was smaller than the York's, then the York may not be spinning fast enough.

Or the thing could be leaky internally or whatever. :dunno: If you were closer I'd offer to drop in one of my Yorks as a test, but that's kinda hard given the distance :D

I fixed it.

I removed the York and took it apart since I came to the conclusion that the symptoms could only be caused by the compressor.
I found a small piece of metal stuck under one of the intake valves on the valve plate. That kept the intake valve open all the time.

Works like a charm now.

Sweet! You'll enjoy it ... those things build pressure QUICK :deal:

I still can't really use it though.

I need to get an air tank. I am trying to talk the junkyard owner up the street into letting me take air brake tank from one of his old dump trucks.
Also need to get a safety valve. I figured that I could get something as common as this from Lowes or the local hardware store......I figured wrong.
Then I just need to plumb it all.

For the safety valve, find a local compressor repair place or store that deals in nothing but compressor stuff (or online). I'm revamping my OBA setup for the blazer. Had it all installed on the burb and kept it all before selling it. Thinking about selling both my 5 gallon tanks and making my own custom tanks to fit the spots I want them to go better.

Anyone have any insight into the coalescing filter? I don't want to spend $114.95 plus shipping for one from Kilby. That would more than double the cost of this OBA.

You mean just a filter?

(example, they have lots, and one or another is almost on sale.)

or from Sears

Wow, are they really that much more? :dunno: The HF ones have worked for me.

I looked at HF when I was there a few days ago.....I was completely unimpressed with the quality of them.

I did see the exact thing you posted at Sears, but I heard that I should steer away from anything with a plastic bowl. I guess the heat gets to it after a while.

Kilby uses a metal bowl filter from Coilhose Pneumatics.

I am not an e-bayer though.....

I am! I am!

I'll tell ya', I've gotten some really good deals off of ebay & I recommend it to anybody. You just have to do you're homework so you don't get hosed.

How about here.

Save you a few bucks.

Later,
Buddy

Yeah, I had a plastic one melt ... not on my truck's OBA, but on my homebrew gas-powered compressor. The one on the truck is back by the tank, so it doesn't get as hot as, say, in the engine compartment. :dunno:

I have an e-bay account and have used it before. There are just so many scammers and whiners out there that I would rather deal face to face with a local business or a reputable vendor on CK5.

Totally understandable. Just thought I'd try to help.
