Picked up a tank today at the junk yard.
It is pretty good size, but was built weird. There is a separator welded inside the tank to make 2 tanks out of 1???
I will measure it later and try to figure out the capacity. The POR15 is drying right now.

Well the tank is around 11 gallons depending on what website calculator I use.
Diameter is around 9.5"
Length is about 35"
New problem though...
There are no mounting brackets on the tank. Am I safe to weld on the tank?
If so I will put mounting brackets where I need them, if not what can I do to safely mount the tank?

I guess it depends on the thickness of the tank, but in this case too much penetration would be bad
I used a piece of angle iron in a V, and two straps (1/8" thick x ~1/2") around it ... weld a coupla pieces of allthread onto an ends of each strap, and voila, a tighten-able holder:
Yeah, I know I'm a pic whore... but it makes more sense to LOOK at it, imho, than my lousy description.
Anyway, you can sort of see the allthread sticking down towards the back... there's a washer and nut on it, and I just tightened the straps down until the tank wasn't going anywhere, called it good.
Make sense?

Did you cut off part of your air cleaner and boogerweld a flat piece in there, by chance?

I can't weld sheet metal for crap. thicker I am pretty good at.
I had to get a vertical water neck so that the rad hose did not go directly into the York. That made the hose hit the breather housing....so I cut it and welded in a piece of sheet metal from a washing machine.

LOL, I know your pain. Even with .023 wire and a steady hand, I suck at doing sheetmetal.
Oh yeah, now you mention it, I 'member all the fun you had in getting the gooseneck.
But hey, it works, and once you have a working York OBA you'll never look back.

I am starting to consider mounting the tank in the bed. Than I could do it without welding on it. But I would much rather it be in the area where a passenger side gas tank would go....
I forget ... this is on a pickup, or a K5?
Anyway, no matter ... you could do the angle-iron thing like I did, mount the angle iron above it and strap the tank up, whatever. Saves you welding on the tank for sure.
EDIT: It's just like the gas tanks on semis ... that's where I got the idea... so you could strap the thing along the side no problem.

The problem with the strap idea is stress.
The frame is around 6" tall in that location. The tank with the goofy crossover pipe is almost 12" That would put the centerline of the tank at the bottom of the frame rail.
The only way to overcome that problem and stick with the adjustable strap idea is to mount it to the body. Not a big fan of that.
Let me try to make a quick graphic of where I want to mount it.

One, do up the bracket like you have, but don't weld it, strap the tank. Run the straps from the bottom weld point at 8 o'clock, around the far side (outside, right on your picture) to the top one at 11.
Or, two, do up a coupla holders for the tank (black), put some flat stock between them (red) which you can bolt to the frame, and then strap around the outer, right-hand side (see attached.)
Anyway, I think you're on the right track ... I just would worry about welding on the middle of a tank, especially if you don't have to.

Good Point. I thought about doing a bracket like I drew but instead of 3 weld points just add a piece of bent flat stock.....
I don't really have a way to bend it in a circle though......short of beating it in shape using the tank... But if I could then straps would work I think.

Sorry, thought I said so ... the straps are ~1/2 x 1/8" flat stock from the local hardware store. It's thin enough I could bend it more or less by hand, might have needed a little massaging with the hammer around the tank's circumference.
Easy to bend, still plenty sturday, and easier to weld than sheetmetal

Cool, Any close up pics on how you welded all-thread to it, or how the strap is attached (welded?) to the angle iron?
Straps are welded on one end, yeah... then a piece of flat stock on the opposite end, for the all-thread to fit into. The all-thread is just butt-welded onto the end of the strap.

... lessee what I can rustle up. Four pix, NOT resized as I usually do for public consumption ... no comments about my welding, as I have gotten better. I hope

That last one is taken at an odd angle, so ignore the background and just look at the straps, or you'll be turning your head around until it hurts. I know, I just did
