I have a Makita sawsall my older brother gave me--that thing has been through the mill and back, and still works well..
He built a car hauler beavertail bed and used this saw to cut all the channel iron, etc, and it has cut an old chevy van in two when he made a trailer out of the rear half of it,and somewhere along its life, the "nose" where there is a blade guide you butt up against the item your cutting, got completely busted off, taking some of the metal casing with it..
You could see the blade holder going in & out,and if you looked close, you can see the ring gear inside it turning through the "hole" where the housing broke off--I took the saw apart once to clean out a hand full of metal dust and found a few chipped ring gear teeth--I packed it with fresh grease, used some J-B putty to cover up the missing piece of the housing, and I'm still using it..you cant even hear the missing teeth when its in use,nor does it "skip" or strip..
I would probably be inclined to buy another Makita after seeing the abuse this one had withstood, but like everything else, the "new" ones probably are not made "like they used too"...quality seems to be hit or miss on many big name brands nowadays..
For the record,a friend has a 20 buck Harbor Freight sawsall he's beaten up since day one for 3 years now,and its still going--hasn't even had to put the spare set of brushes in it yet..
I bought a Milwaukee 3/8" reversible variable speed "Hole-Shooter" drill at a flea market a few years ago for 15 bucks--I put a 1/2" chuck on it the first day,off my dead Black & Decker drill, and that thing surprised me,its got enough torque to twist off your wrist,I was drilling 1/2" holes in my frame for a trailer hitch, and when the bit jammed,my wrist got tweaked and smashed against the truck so hard it hurt for weeks..
Even my other 1/2" drill doesn't have that much power..
I'm in the market for another 4-1/2" grinder,my 9" old Craftsman is a beast,I can cut 1" bolts with cutoff wheels with that thing, but its too bulky and hard to control for other uses much of the time..
I used to have 2 of the cheap 4" grinders I paid 4 dollars each for at a swap meet, but they both were destroyed when they fell 4 feet to the floor, the plastic casings shattered like glass--but I had used the hell out of both of them up until that point, and they never gave any trouble..now even Harbor Freight gets at least 15-20 bucks for one,and they look identical to the no-name china ones I had before..
I may as well pay 40+ bucks at Lowes and get a DeWalt or some other "good" brand ...
