That sounds reasonable. I find my trip mileage estimates about .8 to 1 mpg better than actual….not surprising, my new Blazer does as well.

I figured the Duramax would get better than that...? Seems way lower than it should.
When I went out to get my CC K30 from Eric, my '15 Silverado half ton with the 5.3 averaged 12.5 towing it home. A trailer of 9800# through Yellowstone and the mountains to the east of it. Then 70 mph into the wind across SD.

Think I'd definitely do some upgrades.

There are two kinds of diesel owners, one group who doesn't get as good of mileage as the other group, and liars.

My 7.3L super duty dually gets like 13 empty. No idea towing, probably single digits as it weighs like 23k with my 5th wheel and I am usually going up 6% or worse mountains. At least it has a 35 gal tank LOL. Those Duramax Chevys got hosed with the little tanks.

I know that having the speedometer corrected for the tire size has an impact on the actual numbers.
My son has an '03 without EGR, (federal emissions), an 80 HP tune that burns very clean, and 3:73 gears. He can go 10K on oil changes and the oil isn't black. Schaeffer's full synthetic. He has 4" exhaust from the down pipe back with a medium length muffler.
We went to Denver and picked up a wrecked '00 1/2 ton on a steel tilt deck trailer. It got 16.3 on the trip back from Denver loaded. That was calculated mpg. Definitely less wind drag than the camper.

My calculated mileage is off by 4 miles/100, so that would be about .5mpg, so that brings it up to 12 mpg for the trip….lol
is the speedo recal done by a tuner?

Yes, it has to be corrected in the ECM.
The actual tire measurement is better than the tire size.
The guy who did my son's truck is no longer doing them because of wherever he is working now. But he did a great job when compared to a previous tune. The guy said that he did some things that lots of people simply ignore. I don't know exactly what, but it doesn't smoke much, fires up very crisp. It's all that the stock transmission will take, and requires tow/haul for much weight on the passes. The kid put it in limp mode once because he forgot to push the button! :haha:
He said that sucked to go from 60 mph going up Vail, to 25ish, before he could get to a spot to reset it.

Took a trip to Detroit today, avg. 18.0 for the 283 miles including calculating the mismatched mileage (2%). Mostly highway 72-73mph on cruise, when traffic would allow. About 40 miles rural driving on backroads. Tires (265/75) at 70#, truck was empty, save for a set of tires/wheels in the bed. So Im fine w that, but towing mileage sucks balls. Could the exhaust be the culprit tanking the towing mileage?

Straight pipe it!

Cheep way to find out.

It could be a combination of intake, exhaust, EGR and wind resistance. EGR is not good for performance of any kind.

Right on that…..Ive Been reading about the fingerstick, or just a block off/delete, but some say they throw codes?
I really don’t want want a loud droning intake or exhaust system, as it just gets annoying after miles on the road. Truck is decently quiet now, its nice to carry on a conversation at times (Dont have a wife that needs blocking out…lol).

My son did a Banks air filter/ cold air system. Stock '03 mouthpiece. I don't notice intake noise, but I have been around class 8 trucks for over 30 years.

He bought Diamond Eye 4" exhaust. He tried it straight pipe and found out that as soon as he hooked to a trailer and increased the load at all, drone started to happen in the cab. (Extended cab, 8' bed) I believe that he got a Magnaflow muffler and it is just right.
