Restomod build for a late friend
While I agree that odd side only points toward a head or gasket issue, its unlikely a cam lobe or two would effect the whole bank. I think guide seals are a good guess.
Agree, I just think its weird that the odd side always seems affected more.

My guess is the crappy o ring valve seals from that era. Does that truck have the typical blue smoke cloud on first start up? If so, definitely valve seals.

It smokes constantly.

This video was from a few months back. You can see a little smoke from passenger tail pipe, but considerably more from driver’s side.

So I’m thinking I just want to rebuild this engine. I don’t want to change exhaust and other stuff.

With that being said, how much should I bore this engine? What’s a reliable amount?

I’m thinking something like a 355ci with a better cam, lifters, and roller rockers. I want reliable and good cruising down the highway with no overheating.

.030 over is pretty standard if it will clean up.

You may consider building a 383, as the cost to turn the crank and recondition the rods is sometimes more than a new 383 rotating assembly.

The same with the 454, a 489 is pretty awesome and not much more than a 454 rebuild.

Motor mounts are the same.

Well they are different, but if you unbolt the clamshells from your small block, and bolt them to the big block, it will work just fine. You don't have to change anything.

Martin

He's correct, I did exactly that, if you use them as a set they interchange, you just can't mix and match.
