Next issue...

My fuel gauge is intermittent. New wiring from the tank to the bulk head on the firewall. I double checked to make sure it wasn't an issue with a loose wire at the sender, and everything is good there.

So my question is, what else should I check?
 
Could be cluster to bulkhead but my money is on the gauge itself or the crappy plug at the back of the cluster. Pull it and ohm it out from sender wire on the back of the cluster to battery ground then do the sender to ground back at the tank it you can get to it. See how far off the two resistance readings are. If it's totally dropping off and coming back then it's going open. Could even just be a ground issue. I believe the sender grounds to the chassis then the chassis and engine ground together and cab grounds to chassis and engine and all that. Make sure all grounds are attached and cleaned up. If it all checks out ok up to the cluster plug assume it's in the printed circuit board or the gauge itself.
 
My crew cab has the ground coming off the tank sender shoved in a crack in the sheet metal on the cab above it. I'm surprised it works. I'll grab a pic if I remember tonight.

Mine is mounted to the frame right next to the tank. Everything looked good, but I might clean it up a bit more and see what that does.
 
Super simple carb. Easy to rebuild and get dialed in. It's not going to make gobs of power being a 2bbl, but once rebuilt they are rock-solid reliable.
 
Pulled the carb last night to clean it and inspect the float and needle/seat. I noticed they only had 2 of the 4 bolts holding the carb on the intake. I can't tell, but they either filled the holes with RTV or they broke bolts off in the intake. I'll be digging into it more tonight.

Many SBC 2 bbl carbs only had 2 bolts,diagonally opposed...the base gasket will only have 2 bolt holes,but the carb base has all 4..so thats factory!..

You are exactly right. There are no holes in the intake for the other 2 carb mounting holes.

So that being said, the gasket is leaking on either side where those mounting holes are. I sprayed brake clean near them, and the truck started to run better. I'm thinking the carb is warped. Is that a thing? Or should I slap a new carb gasket on and torque to specs and see what happens?
 
It probably wouldn't hurt to check the carb base for being warped with a straight edge,you could file it or put some emery cloth on a flat surface (like a table saw table) and rub it back and forth to remove any high spots..be careful no steel filings get in the carb..
OR you can use some RTV to fill in the gaps and not have to do that..

The proper base gasket for the 2 bolt style has plastic buttons made into the bolt holes ,so it cant be torqued down too much and crack the carb base..it doesn't need to be all that tight either..

I have three SBC 307's that have the 2 bolt intake ,and they have the smaller sized 2 bbl with the 1-1/4" throttle plates--they came on 283's and some 327's too..there is another version of the 2GC that has 1-1/2" plates,usually used on some 327's,350's and 400 SBC...the smaller carbs & intakes provide a higher air flow velocity thru the intake & heads and give more low end torque and throttle response..

Many stock cars run locally are (were ) restricted to using 2bbl carbs and many guys found them to work as well or better than a 4 bbl--"leaner is meaner" is a common old school race track saying!..

I have gotten close to 20mpg with those smaller carbs & intakes..
My first K5 had a 2 bolt intake and smaller 2GC swapped onto its original 350 and it ran strong..when I bought a used Holley 4 bbl intake with a Carter AFB to put on it,I was dissapointed,it no longer pulled strong from a dead stop,it would feel "flat" until it got over 2500 rpms or so,then the secondaries kicked in and it'd scoot,but it also started pinging and jerking under low rpm load ,like lugging up a hill in third gear..the smaller carb never made it ping and you could lug it down to almost stalling and it would pull strong with no spark knocking..if I hadn't given the 2bbl & intake away,I'd have put it back on!..the Carter was a fuel hog too,it went from almost 20 mpg to 12..
 
Forgot to add there may be a hole in the gasket or a slot to provide vacuum for a port on the carb base,you wont want any RTV getting in there and plugging it up..
It's been 20 years since I had a 2GC apart but I think that port gives vacuum to the power piston..keeps it closed at idle and when vacuum drops a spring opens the power piston to dump in more fuel..

You are correct. I saw it when I had it apart the first time.
 
This is the gasket my carbs needed...note only 2 holes,and the picture doesn't show the opening for the vacuum port well,its more of a slot.
There are several others available that are "universal" with 4 bolt holes or slots,those will leak,and aren't thick enough to avoid heat transfer from the intake...I bought the one for my van's 307 using the 1973 Chevelle listing that the engine came from...it may be a hunt to find one nowadays,they didn't use them after '73 ,they went to the bigger 2 bbls on all SBC then..2GC base gasket 2 bolt style.jpg
