I like a variety of terrain to go wheelin on. The mountains were cool because there were rock crawling areas with creek crossings. There used to be more shade up there but the fires burned it all away. Having water nearby is a big advantage over being in the dry desert.
But on the other hand the desert actually keeps a comfortable average temp between Easter & Halloween and is cold at night.
IMHO recovering a vehicle that had a catastrophic failure would be easier in the desert than in the mountains. The desert is pretty flat & isn't much work dragging somebody's broke rig back to camp. The mountains would be a whole lot more work.

I noticed some slop in my steering so I went out to inspect some things. What do I find?
My gear box mounting bolts were loose.
Easy fix. I tightened them up & wow what a difference! I still need to shorten my drag link a little bit, the steering wheel is at 1:00 when cruising straight.But damn it's tight now.
I'm heading down to the junkyard this weekend, maybe I'll find something kool.
Oh yea, I plan to return to Big Bear, crab flats campground on Sept. 17th. Chime in or shoot me a PM if you want to hit a trail or meet & greet.

That's the same thing that happened to me. They kept backing out after I tightened them, so I wound up putting in slightly longer bolts with nuts on the back side and torquing them down pretty good. No issues since, you might wanna keep it in mind.

... So I went to the junkyard today and saw 14 bolt axles for $85! I almost bought some. I didn't see any dana 60 fronts, what vehicle do they typically come on?
There was an 8 lug 10 bolt front with the diff cover egg shaped like a dana 60- paired with a 14 bff rear. I guess that would be a 3/4 ton set up- right?
Next weekend all parts are 50% off.
I'm thinking low budget build

To bolt right up you want a 60 out of a K30, preferably a SRW. But if you go with 3/4 set up, I "THINK" the 14b mounts right up, no cutting and replacing spring pads. Somebody will probably be along to tell me I'm wrong though.
That;s what search is for.
The spring plates measured the same, 42.5" rear 31.5" front.

Yes, the 3/4 ton 14 bolt will bolt on with no modifications (usually). On the 1 ton 14ff, the distance between the spring perches is less (narrower) and the shock mounts are in the opposite direction from the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks. Not sure why they did it like that.
A front D60 will cost you a lot more than $85 too, like over $1000 usually. They're pretty rare, whereas the 14 bolt is really common.

lol, it leaked all over the bed of my truck on the mountain ride home! 
My version of the stroy.
So Jess & I went to the yard. Usually there are amigos out there that will pull a part for you if you kindly give them a tip.
I found out the part pickers weren't working that say & Jess & I had to remove the axle ourselves.
Well, I didn't plan on this but I did bring a few sockets & wrenches. At the last second I figured I should grab by piece of sprinkler pipe that I keep with my camping tools. Neither one of us brought a highlift.
This axle was totally complete, the tires were still on it. We ended up removing it only 3/8" sockets and that pipe, open ended wrenches and no penetrating oil of any kind and that pipe. When we got the nuts off the U bolts they were pretty darn hot!
We got the axle out from under the truck and put the tires back on it so we can roll it to the check out. Suddenly I get the urge to take off as fast as I can while pushing the axle. I started to get going pretty fast when I grabbed the E brake cable & pulled- It stopped pretty good.
It was a good day, Jess paid me a fine finders fee- a Double Double animal style at In & out.
I'll pick up my big boy axles pretty soon.
Jess if you decide not to use that axle I want first dibs on it.

Okay, I have to ask. What is "a Double Double animal style at In & out?" I'm almost scared to know. Please tell me it's not as bad as it sounds.

Only way to get better, is make it a 4x4, which is 4 paddies and 4 pieces of cheese. Or, just Animal Style Fries
