‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

You mean your Cornbinder has a Chevy in it? Well, that's kinda the standard with price and avail of IH parts.
Of course the Rover uses an old GM engine. It was the only way they could think of to keep the oil on the inside.
You know why the British don't make computers? The couldn't figure out how to make them leak oil.

Yah the Rusty Yellow Twinkie has a 327 in it and runs like a champ.

Every MF'n thing on the older rovers leaks oil. At least you know when it is out of oil, cuz it stops leaking:D

Well pblaze, your thread has been successfully derailerd Pac region style. I guess that's your official welcome, since we do this all the time. Just remember, the discussion should never stay on topic past the first few posts.:waytogo:

thats a pretty nice blazer. where was that first pic taken? looks familiar for some reason.

The very first pic (pre- camo) was taken at Cabrillo Monument at Point Loma, San Diego.

The first pic of the last post was at Corral Canyon OHV. I failed Bronco peak trail due to a Holly street carb & off timing. I kept stalling at climbs & finally went back to the parking lot and rode in my buddys Yeep.I won't forget the duchebags in their 4 runners were making fun of me saying " You shoulda bought a carb instead of those fancy lights', AND "I'm STILL waiting for the BRONCO" BRONCO!!?? Really? BTW_That's not me in the pic thats the guy with the Yeep.

Broken axle shaft

I went to TDS '09. I checked in and went to camp. We decided to go on a quick run. I was less than a mile away from camp in a wash trying to climb an easy little obstacle when I heard a loud SNAP! I broke my first axle shaft!
I didn't know at first I kept trying to get up this wall. My buddy jumped out & then gave me the "cut it off" sign. I was rubbing the inside sidewall on the outside above my wheel well. Jokingly my friends were yelling "BURN IT!"

I jacked up the rear end with a highlift jack, pushed the axle back in & hooked up a strap to a hook on the rear bumper & pulled him out to the wash. Since we were pulling towards the broken side there were no worries about pulling the broken shaft out.We loaded him up on the trailer, notice the tires overhanging on both sides. We slept in the rig, on the trailer.
The next morning I went on a quest for a pull a part junkyard. We found a replacement axle shaft at the 2nd junkyard we found. Pulled it & came back to camp. I have to drive this thing home ya know...

I took out the Detroit locker but had a hard time getting the broken piece out. A special thanks goes out to UDS hardware team for helping me get the broken nub out.A small piece of sprinkler pipe & a sledge hammer worked perfect and are now a part of my camping tools.
49.jpg I got everything back together right as the sun was setting. I missed the big trail run, oh well. I had a great night run.

I took it off & grinded on the weak spot.JIMMY 021.jpg

I cut a piece of steel, bent it then welded it where it was notchedJIMMY 017.jpg

cross member notch

I flipped it over & cut out more metal. Then welded the top.X member.jpg

Sorry this one is so dark. I painted it black & mounted it. Now I have more clearance.JIMMY 020.jpg

custom dash

I got tired of the old cracked dash so I tore it out & made one out of sheet metal. I reused the factory vents and added some speakers. I painted it with truck bed liner.

Tow bar

I got tired of going to the junkyard every time I break something while out in the desert. So I made a tow bar. I used 2x2x 1/4" square tube.

JIMMY 005.jpg I decided to go with a lunette ring/ pintle hitch

JIMMY 002.jpg I plated the top & bottom at the lunette ring.

JIMMY 004.jpg I wanted to attach to the shackle clips I already have on my bumper. Here are some gussets ready, I was going to triangulate more square tubing but it was way too heavy so I went with the gussets.

JIMMY 008.jpg Test fitting the ride height before I get too far along.

JIMMY 024.jpg The ride height was ok with the stock sagging suspension but after I lifted JIMMY 2.5" I had to get a hitch adapter to get the tow bar back in the safe zone.

Tow bar cont.

This is my tow rig attached to the JIMMY after the lift. It rides smooth and handles well.

I had a better pic but I can't seem to find it right now. I plan to get a trailer ASAP. A tow bar wouldn't work very well if I snapped another C-clip axle shaft.

I like what you did with that crossmember. I have the same problem. Except mine is the later W shaped member? Why chevy would use that one i don't know as it hangs down way too low. P.O. high centered it and bent it backward causing my clearance issues. I plan on doing what you did. Good job.

Thanks bud, a friend of mine used a piece of 4" pipe on his, he even had it powder coated. He was going to give it + a spare NP208 AND driveshafts to me for free, but somebody at his shop decided they needed it more & swiped it.

Broken Axle cont.

My buddy Charley; the guy who sold me the JIMMY moved from CA to NY. He took him time & toured all of the national forests on the way. He was the guy with me when I snapped the axle shaft.
Here is what he sent me a few weeks after he moved:
