Now I gotta clean these, and add the additional leaf in the pack, and we will see how well it works.

What do you do with the center pin when you add leafs? Get a new one? Or is it just a bolt? Sorry never messed with springs other thab just putting a pack in.

Usually you get a new one. They are generally about rusted away when you tear the pack apart.

My center pin was still in good shape but too short for the extra spring I added to the pack.
These springs are 4-5 years old.

I bought a new longer one and new longer U bolts.

I've heard about guys using a bolt and grinding the head round but I didn't want to go that route.

Center pin

The new center pin is longer so I can bolt the pack together without compressing it.

Then I can tighten it down, and now I can just cut it off.

Awesome!! Ill have to find some longer ones when I rip the Alcans apart to cycle them for bump and shock mount locations :thumb:

Be much easier than compressing.

follow up

Here is a pic of the JIMMY after the work is done.

The added leaf and repairs lifted the rear about 1" on the good side and 2.5" on the saggy side.

It sits even now.

I'm cool with that. :D

Tril gear

In preparation for my next big event I decided to organize and consolidate my trail gear.
Give your opinions on what you feel that might not be needed. I am going out in the desert and need to be prepared.

Bag 1- A quick grab bag with tow strap jumper cables and 3/8" chain.
I decided to ditch the chain because I never use it and it feels like it weighs 30lbs.

High lift mounted on the side wall resting on my wheel well along with my lighted whip & flag for night wheelin. A Shovel is mounted on other wheel well.

Bag 2- This is my little "oh Sh!t" bag. Contents are:
Craftsman wrench roll,
Blue bag- misc wrenches of various sizes and shapes that have been used for odd ball situations

Brown bag- ratchet and socket set,red bag- tin snips, pliers, vise grips, channel locks, wire strippers, needle nose, Allen wrenches. (I ditched the wire strippers, and house hold style pliers and channel locks)

Orange bag in the back- Several types of screwdrivers. I ditched most of the screwdrivers that I hardly ever use and kept the multi tip screwdrivers and a special pen screwdriver that a Ck5 member mailed me.

Also Zip strips, bailing wire, red safety tape makes a good tail lights, and a red pirate flag for when I am in OHV areas.

Trail gear cont...

Truck fluids, 5 gallons of truck water, 1 gal of gear oil and pump, 2 quarts of tranny fluid, break fluid, the purple stuff funnels and my favorite Polo shirt
all in a rubbermaid bin that can hold all of the radiators coolant.

Also two rear axle shafts and one spare front drive shaft.

great idea on the rubbermaid tub....I have a few of them to use as well, I like the way you can put a lock in the latch to keep them shut!

any idea how much weight in the spares and necessities for trail gear?

The spare tire weighs 80lbs according to the BFG website. I would say 100lbs with the rim and mount.

I don't how much the rest of the stuff weighs I never put it on a scale. I'd say it's at least another 150lbs:dunno:.

I'm starting to have second thoughts about removing that chain.
...In a bind I could use it with my high-lift as a come-along.
... But it's so damn heavy and I've never even used it.

Opinions on the chain? take it or leave it?

If your worried about weight. Get a tow strap instead of chain.

D-shaft sounds like a good idea to me.

I have a tow strap. It's in bag1.

I use it all the time.

I'm just not sure if I want to bring the chain too.
