‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

I'm looking to part with a sm465 setup on the cheap

That's what I will do eventually too. That's the way to go. If your truck's already got an automatic, it's easier just to put in another one. It was pretty easy for me to go from the 700 to the 400. It would probably be harder to go the other way.

Look for the square shaped pan and the electrical plug on the driver side. That's a TH700R4. Oh and the 4 speeds is a dead giveaway too. :D TH350 and TH400 will only have three. No overdrive.

Not much of an update but you may like my home made torch.
it's a beer can stove.

I made this one out of the aluminum bottle. The cone shape of the bottle top is the firewall inside.

I'm using it to burn the injection cast plastic from the XJ shaft.

One of the brothers was saying sometimes XJ shafts fail by spinning out at the rubber boot.

I welded the tube to the Ujoint to prevent it from spinning .

Free insurance. :dunno:

Good idea. It was me that had the XJ shaft fail like that. Could have been a very bad thing if it would have went out at highway speeds.

Here's the crossmember that is for a TH700R4 and NP208. As you can see, it attaches way up higher than the flat one you have now. In fact, I would be interested in seeing what adapter you have between your 700 and 208. It's possible that there is more than one adapter out there. I would think that your's would have to stick a lot farther down than the one that came out of my truck.

Adapter plate? I sure they bolt right together. All OEM.

I'll check it out. I know the 208 sticks down pretty low. There is an aluminum skid plate on it.

I'll run out & snap some current pics....

EDIT- The camera is not working right now but I have a part number. 14038663

BTW 1/2 off at the junkyard today!

Pics for today.

This is my 700-208 adapter plate. It is an OEM part.

This is a current pic of the JIMMY.

The rear has settled quite a bit so I was thinking about adding a spring from my old set. I took them apart yesterday.
How much lift do you think I can get by adding a single leaf? Is it worth it?
:dunno:

I know I can get zero rates but to me that's just a 1" block. I don't want blocks.

This is my scrap pile. It consists if a sway bar, a few broken axle shafts,a broken front drive shaft, a drag link, and a set of leaf springs, some Jeep steelies, A BROKEN VISE :eek1::haha: and an old bed frame that got sacrificed to the GM gods.

Any input on the leaf spring question is appreciated:waytogo:.

Are you running 56s yet? myrear set up is 56's with the overload flipped and a zero rate push the axle back....a one block isn't goingto hurt anything, and way cheaper than new springs.

No I'm running a 2.5" budget lift. The rear springs are about 49" long.
Still using the OEM hangers.
I'm saving for the wedding so I can't buy and kewl parts for about a yr. :doah:

So I was thinking about cutting the overload spring and using it as a 5/8" block and adding this spring that fits in the pack.
I think this would give me about an inch and still be perform well.

What do you think?:dunno:

Sounds like there in good shape. I just need some steel wheels for some stands. :dunno:

They are in good shape but they mount on a Jeep. I was thinking about making a stand out of the 10" one and selling the other 4 on CL.

The best deal would be to get some from the junkyard.

Sounds good to me, as long as you bolt it through the pack with a new centering pin you're good to go.

Funny on that adapter pic you posted, my 700r/208 factory adapter is different, cast entirely differently and my crossmember is like the one andyblack posted.

This is the adapter that was between my 700 and 208.

I guess there is more than one type of adapter out there. You learn something new every day on this site.

I would have reused that one because there would have been more clearance for the front shaft with the original crossmember but it wouldn't have bolted up to the 400. The adapter attached to the 700 with four bolts vs. six for the 400.
