‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

Looks better IMO. I think they should have come like that originally instead of squared off. GM trucks still have the same awkwardly shaped fender openings.

Front steering stuff

Since I decided not to use the TRE with the hole in it I ordered a left handed TRE from WFO.

Part# EX2234L

This leaves me torn.

When I did the current set up (Norcal cross-over) I put a right handed TRE on both ends. The logic was if I break one, I have a spare or I can easily replace it with an off the shelf TRE.

If I use the left handed one this time, and break it out in the desert, the replacement part is a special order one. I don't want to order 2 of everything where do you draw the line?

What do you think?

RH thread on both sides for easier TRE replacement?

or

RH one side LH the other for easier alignment adjustment?

I say one right and one left. That's just the way it's supposed to be. If you ever have to adjust it (and you will), it will become a pain to take it off over and over to get the steering wheel right. Plus you'll run the risk of messing them up by taking them loose more than neccessary.

It is going to be straight isn't it? 'Cause if it's going to have a bend in it then you would have to take it loose to adjust it anyway.

Yes, the bar will be straight. I'm going LH-RH just because "that's the way it's supposed to be".

Thanks for the feedback, it's always welcome here. :waytogo:

Painted and sealed up the 13 bolt. It's ready to rock. :woot:

I got my TRE from WFO so I'm going to start the front steering next.

It will be cobbled together with mostly stock bolt on parts:D

Maybe but it looks kinda dark underneath the JIMMY to me. Like the sun wasn't at your back enough. I would use it though.

I like the first one if you send me the hi-res one ill see if I can balance how dark under the truck is a little bit

These are just my crappy cell phone pics. I didn't upload the camera shots and GoPro footage yet.

Youtube video

Here's a video from the run.

Enjoy

Coolness. I felt like I was right there in the cab. What a great view from the top too. Thanks for posting.

Front steering setup

I got the left handed TRE from WFO. With it installed I took some measurements and determined the stock steering drag link is 3" too short.
That's OK I have a welder now and some left over link tubing laying around the scrap pile.

With a piece of 3/4" solid steel rod as a slug I positioned my plug welds to be in 90* increments for a total of 4.

Then I put that hi steer ram mount on the table and melted some metal.

...with the mount near it's final location I can set the height of the ram. I want it to be parallel with the steering drag link in elevation.

Now I can adjust the mount forward a little to be parallel in line with the steering link.

Next I made a cardboard template for some double shear tabs to connect the ram to the steering link.

Notice the tabs will be used to reinforce the splice.

This is all made out of scrap. :D
