‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

Chapter 2

With the shaved 13 bolt installed I have 10 1/2" ground clearance.

A shot of the Dana 44 front.

FAIL
It didn't take long for me to find the first problem with the ram assist tabs on the tie rod. At full lock right the tab contacts the U bolts and acts as a steering stop.

The top of the Ram Assist mount appears to be close to the oil pan. It's about 4" away from it. Since the axle doesn't travel as much in the center it my not be an issue. I need to cycle the suspension to find out.

This pic shows the size difference of the 10 bolt and D44 brake caliper mounts.
In the planning stages I wanted to avoid grinding on the brake calipers to fit 15" rims. My plan was to use the caliper mount and calipers from the 10 bolt so it would fit in the 15" rims.
That failed too.

So I started to :grind:

14 bolt 061.jpg
I ground cut and hammered the Caliper and mount to fit 15's

Even the hub lock gave me a hard time. I had to drill out one of the little bolts. At the end of the day it worked.

Tomorrow I do the other side.

So the caliper mount/backing plate thing wouldn't swap between the 10 bolt and the D44? I bet it would if they were both 8 lug axles. I'm pretty sure the 6 lug versions are interchangable. I think the spindles are different between the 6 and 8 lug ones too.

Man you did a lot of work in just one weekend.:thumb: From the way you posted about it being parked in the backyard with a guard dog and all, I was expecting it to be out of action for a while.

What are you going to do about the driveshaft? Conversion u-joint?

The caliper mounts would not swap. The D44 rotors would not align using the 10 bolt caliper mount. If you think of it like a rim the backspacing was about 1/2" different.

Yea, I worked my butt off this weekend. I didn't have any help.

I'm going to take the driveshaft down to a local shop. I was going to shorten it myself but I decided to let the pro's handle it. It will be about $100. Even for a low budget build I think it's worth the price not having to worry about it.

Yes, I plan to use a conversion joint.

Shorten it? What am I missing here? Why does it need to be shortened? What else have you changed?

Um, er... Yer right the length looks ok, I just need to get a conversion joint.

I guess I was thinking the driveshaft needed to be shortened because the yoke on the 13 bolt was further forward.

If you take into account that I was using the stock driveshaft with a 2.5" lift it was already a little short, add the bigger axle and the length turns out to be just right again.

Huh?! Go figure...:dunno::confused:

Keep up the good work so I learn from you because I just brought home 14 bolt and it looks like a 44 front also so this will be in my future. Cheapest way to start I hope.

Finally I can see your pics!!!! Now I get to go back and read

Welcome back bro!
You would think a guy with a Jeep as an aviator and GM of the month checkered flag wouldn't have to pay dues to be member.
I was just about to pay for you too. It must have had something to do with the gummit shutting down.

I finished grinding the other side. The boss checked my work, he approves.

Next up, steering set up.
My other LH drag link from WFO is here. I'm going to use it on the drag link.

Rear Driveshaft Installed with a 1330/1350 conversion U joint.

Steering next, then I can drive it! :woot:

I'll move it back in front of the garage so I can work on suspension.

I recycled my Tie rod and made a Home brew drag link today.

Tomorrow I'll do a driveway alignment and hopefully find a good way to mount the ram.

Holy crap dude! You're really speeding along here. You must have been inspired by NorCal Chris. I'm going to have to start referring to you as "SoCal Paul" from now on. That has a nice ring to it I think.

Actually yes I am inspired by NorCal_Chris.
I copied his Cross over, carb modifications, and now I have a Jeep too! :D

Well, it's my friends Jeep but my project nonetheless. It too will get NorCal_Chris mods. :pimp:

Axle swap done!

I drove JIMMY out of the back yard today.
I went for a cruise around the block too. :D

I know, I know it looks exactly the same.
...that's what I was going for.:pimp:
