‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

I went to setup the drill press for the holes and saw this vine trying to take over.
I thought that was pretty kewl.

I think that means you don't use your drill enough. Looks like a cool drill you better send it to me to make sure it stays in proper working order. :D

Cage work.

I picked up some 1.75" DOM120.

I made use of the trailer deck for laying out and bending tubes.

image.jpeg

First I rolled out a B pillar.
Keeping true to the term square body I made sure my angles equal 90 degrees.
I believe this was 75/15

image.jpeg

I put a tube across the bottom. I made the top of tube level to the bed floor.

image.jpeg

This way I can still fold and tumble the rear seat.

image.jpeg

I bent up some rail side tubes to form a C pillar. I kept these square at 35/55 degrees.
I made a little off set bend to lean it inward to the center of the bend on the B.
image.jpeg

I invested in a $40 harbor freight tube notcher.
I had to tweak it a little bit to get the hole saw centered on the tube.
It works better than the drill press for me because I can feather the trigger and not get the teeth caught on the edge of tube.

Trimmed to fit here's a side view.

Notched and tacked.

image.jpeg

Got both sides tacked in and added some tubes on the bed sides.

Right now I'm working on the top tube for the C and thinking about adding triangles.

Thanks doods.

I'm trying to follow body lines as much as I can.

I'm trying to decide if I want the top tube for the C pillar to go straight across or if I should bend it on both sides to lift it up a little bit.
If I bend it it would mirror the B pillar and be a little taller.
I think I'll do that.
What do yous guys think?

Bend it or keep it straight?

Is it in the head space for the rear seat? It looks like it is in the picture. If so I'd tweak it for just a bit more head room if you can.

Yes, rear seat headroom.
Yea, I think I already talked myself into it.

Thanks doods.

There's a new bossman in the house.

Meet Parker Lee Frank.

The DOM is starting to get rusty but it'll be alright.
I still manage to get a little garage time in once in a while so I figure I could give a little update.

I was working on the roof section above the back seat.
I made 2 top tubes to fit under the soft top frame.
image.jpeg

I got the tubes right where I wanted them but when I sat in the back seat I felt like it was a little too low.
image.jpeg

So I scrapped that plan and set the bender up on my "Fab Trailer"

image.jpeg
It's been hot, damn hot! I work when I can and learn as I go.

I measured the hardtop and figured I can go up to 23.5" above the bed rails.

image.jpeg
This made a much more comfortable rear seat area and I like the look too.

Next I wanted to triangulate the rear section so I grabbed a piece and threw it on real quick.
image.jpeg
There was something about it I just didn't like.

I had a bent piece left over from a mistake I made so I threw it on the other side real quick to see which one I like better.

image.jpeg

I decided I like the curved pieces better so I recycled them and used 'em on the rear kickers.

image.jpeg

Parker is 1 month today.

He's a handsome dooder.

I put the soft top back on and started working on filling in some tube to mount the snaps.

One piece at a time. Built not bought.

And the side view

Im not a cage builder but I would add another side bar from the front upper corner to back lower corner to make an X on the sides. Just looking at it if you flopped on your lid Im guessing it could kinda just collapse down flat like it is currently. You know the whole triangle thing.
