‘86 K30 Crew- From Sierra to Silverado, & a Cummins

Been putting off the pretty important task of timing the pump lately, so today I jumped in on that. This task is way easier with the engine on a stand. Used the special socket to pull the first 2 delivery valves on the injection pump, and timed it using a homemade dial indicator adaptor. If anyone ever needs to do this, a Cummins oil pan plug is the same thread as the delivery valves. I drilled hole through it wide enough to fit the body of the indicator, and drilled and tapped a small hole for a set screw. Works great, and saves 70 or 80 bucks


Took me a while to find all the specs for base timing for this pump, the engine data plate has info for wrong year and size of injection pump. So I ended up using the Bosch timing chart to set it from no lift. Decided on a conservative 18 degrees of advance, with the lash in the gears it's probably closer to 18.5 or 19. Translated to roughly 232 thousandths of an inch barrel lift



While I had the cover off, I addressed the dowel pin that likes to fall out and grenade the gear train. No need for fancy expensive kits, a few smacks with a hammer and punch and that pin isn't going anywhere


Finally got the front cover cleaned up, front main installed and cover sealed to engine. Had a hell of a time getting the seal in, and It is almost definitely going to leak, but it'll do long enough to do the cam break in, and I can replace it before I drop it into the truck. I want to install a speey sleeve, anyway


Other than that, I finally started throwing some money at this thing. Ordered a set of 5x.014 SAC injectors from DFI, a high mount AC bracket from Adventure Vehicles Northwest, and will likely have a turbo and manifold coming early next week. Decided against the ATS 3 piece manifold, as I read lots about them cracking. Going for a Steed manifold with a T4 flange. Also still working on turbo selection, basically narrowed it down to an S362 or 364, should compliment the injectors nicely to get a decent 450 to 500 horse. That's all for today, hopefully tomorrow I can get the headstuds to their final torque, and clean up and install the valve covers
 
I'm at 18 degrees, 5x.014, a phatshaft 62 and its uncontrollable when its all the way up. Conservative timing ought to be good lol
 
I used a cut up beer can for the KDP. I ran my p-pumped 24v between 20-22 and it ran great but freaking sucked to start when cold with no grid heater.

I ran a steed manifold with an s472 and never had an issue other than the bolts in the heads backing out because I was a dumbass and through away the spacers and retainers.

I’d run the s362 but what size exhaust wheel and housing are you looking at?

Still hoping to have this thing started before the end of the month, so I got the injectors, feed and return lines installed, and cleaned up and installed the valve covers



The manifold I'm after is a few months backordered, so I'm going to do the break in with the stock manifold and no turbo. Since the last post, I've been convinced to do compound turbos, so buying a charger is going to be put off while I contemplate what sizes I want for this thing. I really don't plan to have a need for compounds, but I've always wanted to do a set on a truck, so why not? I'm either going to build my own pipes or use the kit from Crazy Carls, and I'm thinking of an S362 over an S472 or 475. I'll run some numbers later on, but that should be more than enough for what I can actually fuel
 
An hx35//3b was always a solid setup for a mild build. Turbos were cheap and spoiled quick.
My original plan was to do an He351 over a 3b, but I ended up selling the 3b I had a few years back, for whatever dumb reason. I have a turbo on the shelf off a bigger Cat highway engine, may have a look at that and see what the numbers are
 
The high mount AC components finally showed up, and I was able to knock that out today and put lots of the accessories back on. The kit came from Adventure Vehicles Northwest, and it seems to be a quality product. Great customer service, too. Installed the old exhaust manifold, just going to use it for a break in, hopefully a new one will be on it before it goes into the truck


Also spun on a new oil filter, and put the fuel filter head on, along with a new filter


Installed the new tensioner on a relocate plate that came with the kit, the harmonic balancer, and the water pump and fan hub. The balancer is also just a place holder, I plan to put on a fluid damper when funds allow.


Also started looking for someone in the area who does body work on the side, who might be interested in taking the cab over the winter and fixing it up. Still not sure if I want to farm that task out or tackle it myself. I can do most things sheet metal, but I'm pretty slow at it. Would much rather turn wrenches. If anyone knows any good bodymen in central Alberta, I'm interested
 
Build isn't dead, it's just in low range, haha. Managed to pick up a bracket and gear for direct mounting the power steering pump to the timing cover and eliminating the vacuum pump. It was from a member of one of the swap Facebook groups. This is a genuine Cummins part, not the new ones with the Chinese gear you find for sale new.

 
Project Change Again has changed again. The 12 valve build has ground to a halt, and we're moving, so I want to get this thing mobile again. Need to use it as a water truck for a little bit. After scouring for weeks for a good running takeout 6.2, someone abut 3 hours south tossed up a 6.2 with an ATS turbo kit for sale. Ripped down and grabbed that


It's missing some odds and ends, primarily the ATS specific intake horn for the air cleaner and boosted air intake, one glowplug, a starter and some accessories. Should have most of that laying around. On the way home, stopped in at a parts yard on the way to see if I could find some intake pieces. Managed to pull a 6.5 non-EGR upper and lower intake, with a positive air shut off. That's a score in my books


Anyone ever used one of these ATS turbo kits? I have no idea what the turbo is, what kinda numbers it can produce or any power ratings


Someone a few hours north has an NV4500 for sale, with a passenger side drop NP208. That's a very tempting buy, as far as I know it should drop in place of the 465. Need to do some more reading

My ATS is working good, I get mostly 5psi, but a few times I have hit 8psi

The ATS is known to easily push 12-13 psi boost if properly working and the fuel screw in the IP is turned up a little. I’ve seen videos of guys with 6.2 ATS set ups with a manual transmission doing burnout donuts in parking lots. I think it is a pretty cool set up.

It has also been claimed that the ATS turbo has more lag than the Banks turbo. With stock pistons on a 6.2, I recommend keeping boost pressures at 8 psi for longevity. A couple very short 12 psi peaks should be ok as long as egts stay at 1000 or below.

Got lucky this weekend and came across a '96 GM 3500 in the local parts yard. It had an internal slave NV4500 and a big Borg Warner T case, I belive a 44-01 hanging off the back. Naturally that came home with me. Trans has a rebuild tag and the gears look good inside through the PTO covers. I was really hoping to recover the flywheel, but it turned out to be a dual mass unit and I want nothing to do with that. Now I need to sort out transfer case options. The NP208 near me is still available, but I'm not sure about the longevity of those things. What are the options for transfer cases here? I'd like to keep the 205 but adaptors are pricey and this is all supposed to be somewhat temporary

 
The 208 is plenty good. You’ll just have a slip yoke rear shaft like a dodge does.
