03 gmc duramax with 350k (BBT) transmission fun

Cool, never knew that. I'll have to use that next trip, but my trans does exactly what I want when I want. I often think the trans should downshift now, and before I'm done thinking its downshifted.
You like me don't have that option sadly... 03 and up... I am going to add it to mine and my kids this year.

Yah I googled it and found out. I'll have to either buy the Kennedy kit, or I might get the merchant auto tap shifter.

Finally got around to putting new tires on this thing. I ended up getting General Grabber AT2s from Discount because I just couldn't beat the price.

It ended up being a pain in the butt though because I have a small spacer on my front wheels.

Evidently Discount won't bolt on a wheel with a spacer so I had to take the truck home, pull the front wheel myself, then take it back to them to have the tire mounted. Luckily it's only about 1/2 mile from my house, but it was still a pain.

The bigger issue though was something I noticed while the truck was sitting in their bay.

As you can see, that tire is WAY back in the wheel well. I remembered thinking I felt something shifting around back there a few days prior, so I took a look to see what was going on with the axle.

Here you can see that the axle is shifted back quite a bit. The u-bolts on both sides were EXTREMELY loose. I HATE block lifts. I took it all apart, cleaned up the threads and tightened it back up and it's all good now. Sure was scary realizing how loose that rear axle was though. I'll be keeping an eye on that now for sure!

Here's the after pic:

Much better!

How has the ally been holding up?
Actually it's been doing great now that I started keeping it out of overdrive on the hills while towing. No more transmission codes and it shifts nice and strong. The only issue I have with the truck at all is the occasional overboost code still.

My general contractor on my house build has the exact same truck, only with an 8.1 instead. They were parked next to each other the other day and I asked him how many miles it had on it and he says, "well, it's getting up there a bit. I've got about 90,000 on it now. What about you?" When I told him I had 364,000 miles the look on his face was priceless. :haha:

That good to hear about the trans...I wish our trucks came with the lockout. Funny story about the contractor! Good luck with all that BTW!

Small update. Mostly just been driving it. With building a house this truck has been invaluable. I've been hauling lumber, pulling equipment, using a dump trailer, and it's done it all without issue (although I did overload the dump trailer once and bent my hitch) . Even if it died today it would be worth the $6000 I paid for it, but it's still running strong.

The transmission has started leaking from the pan again. When I get a chance I need to try some locktite on the pan bolts.

I had the right rear door handle pull off a couple of days ago, but it was a cheap easy fix.

The old one is in the foreground. There are 3 studs that hold it in place and all 3 of them pulled free. Luckily the new handle was less than $9 from Amazon, and about a 15 min job to replace.

Definitely cool to hear how it is doing.
Makes me wonder about some of the ones that I have seen with less than 250K. Maybe some day....

It's hard to tell in the pic, but BBT is squatting pretty good there. Got about 800 sqft of tile, mostly in the bed.

I am having somewhat of an issue when it gets warm. I am getting hesitation off the line. When the engine is cold it's fine. It acts like an old out of tune 4 barrel. :dunno:

Not sure what the issue is and don't have time to deal with it at the moment but it'll have to get looked at after the house gets built.

Any smoke or tell tale signs? Good cold and not warm could either be a CTS or plugged injectors or?

No smoke that I've noticed. I suspect injectors. They are way past due to be changed, so seems likely

As always try the fuel filter first... Tag @Russell

Check your oil, does it smell like diesel? I should have said to check that first then the others.

Could be a multitude of things that would cause a stumble. You'd want to hook a scan tool up to track some of the sensor inputs to see if anything looks off.

The filter is pretty new, so pretty sure it's not that .

Yeah , that is the plan when I get some time.

Hoses behind drivers side valve cover, and by the transmission can collapse when warm/worn. Suggest replacing your feed lines with good marine grade hose. That or the cp3 is getting weak

Cp3?

I'll check out those hoses.
