how many use a trailer off road for long trips? it is looking like we will need to bring a trailer with us this year for our 8 day trip for hauling gas etc.i have one of the smaller military trailers that we will be doing a soa and a set of 35s to get the axle up out of the ruts.was wanting to see how you have yours set up etc. it will be towed by my jimmy on 44s or a friends blazer on 42s.

heres the trailer i am are starting with.it does have a box built to fit in side it.will get a pic of it later.

I'm curious too.. I saw these and thought they were pretty awesome.. till I saw the price :eek1:

A pintle hitch works the best. I was with a guy who flipped his trailer on its top and all we had to do was flip it back over and go on our way. He had a pintle hitch. If he had a ball hitch, it would have been pretty messed up.
 
Mike, I hauled a trailer like that out to the Motor Musher's cabin and back. It worked great. It was hard to see it in the mirrors though (since it is much more narrow than the burb. It also bounced around a lot on the trail.
 
Now just to find something to use.... those mil trailers seem to go for a LOT here for some reason.

I kinda think a stepside box with an 8 lug axle would be nice, share the same spare tire then.
 
Depending on the undercarrage of the trailer a guy could just make the whole underside one big skid plate farely easily, and it would work decent or at least I would think unless you really have it loaded up heavy.
 
A guy I worked with a few years back built one for his Jeep. He used a 2 link setup with a plate welded across the bars. Acted as a skid plate so nothing would catch the axle. Coil springs with shocks to keep from bouncing as much. The suspension could only go up/down, but on a trailer I dont think you'd care if it could go side/side. He used a pintle as well, but the truck side had a swivel. His looked similar to the Chaser trailers (thats probably where he got the idea) but he carried a tent to use on the ground, not on the trailer. Carried all his extra fuel, parts, tools, whatever.
 
Doesn't look hard, but the problem here in WA is that unless it came with a title you are going to have to play DOL's game.. and that can take a LONG time.

Maybe you could find a small cheap trailer that you can buy as a base for the build thats already titled.
 
Thats the nice thing about Iowa, you just have to get a homemade trailer license. Theres a plate at our farm the drifts amoung 4 trailers haha
 
yep ny state is homemade to a point in weight class.

scale it and get certifyed slip as to empty weight and reg it up easy.
 
I cant remember utah but I think if its under 700lbs empty it doesnt require a title or reg.

Ill look it up in a minute.

• Trailers 751 pounds or more unladen weight must be titled
 
I've always like the pickup box trailers done up to match the towing rig. Same lift, tires and all that. Lots of space. Maybe a bit too wide but that could be fixed.
 
Back third of a Shortbed pickup frame, the bed, rear end, springs and 4" lift blocks plus some cheap 35's sounds like a cheap and easy way to do it. You'd have to graft some kind of yoke setup to it but you can buy those rather easily.
 
Now looking at the trailers shown they have a frame with a box on them.

If I was to buil one where the frame and box was basically one unit I could save weight. Also I think independant torsion axles would save weight and at the same time increase clearance. They are also cheaper from the few minutes I spent searching.

edit sorry torsion axles are not cheaper but reasonably priced at any rate.
