1.5" tie rod

A weld in fitting is not as strong as directly tapping the tube. Also by the time i bought tube and inserts it will still be cheaper to buy a tie rod already made with direct threads.

With inserts, which are also made of DOM, and tubing, I paid about 45-50 for a 1.5 X .25 tie rod. Not meaning to be an ass, but I would like to see where you can get the same tierod for cheaper. Plus... I built, not bought. :D

Unfortunately i don't want a 1.5" x .250" wall DOM tie rod, i'm looking at the king of beef and going for the 1.5" x .375" wall DOM tie rod. :D

You're right though, for what you "built not bought" you probably can't buy it that cheap.

Hmm. thinking with that. you could weld some tow hooks to your tierod. :haha:

With the 1.5" x .375" tie rod i'm sure i could do anything i wanted to within reason and not have any issues with it. However, i do know for a fact that they do bend when the front axle breaks, i've seen it happen a couple times now.

Dom tube & Dom inserts... Are you saying your welds are weak, scott? :p:

I supposed you could say a 3 piece tierod is "not as strong" as a 1 piece kinda like pushrods...
but for the tie rod application i'd probably rather build two for the same price as buying one, and then carry the second as a trail spare. especially if i wasn't hi steer.

But theres no trying to argue with the "king of beef". :rotfl: :pimp1:
Speaking of, whens the pizza night since gregs down here for a few weeks? :wink1:

Actually Ryan, the biggest thing i don't like about the insert idea is the fatc that the inserts aren't as long as the tie rod ends. I know that anything longer than the diameter of the tie rod end itself is wasted material but i just want threads at least the same depth as the tir rod end is long.

Pizza night has been canceled since everyone seems to be going to the BBQ at Pacific Fab on saturday which i can't attend as i'll be at a wedding on the beach in Carmel on saturday. The wife and i are going to take Greg out to Vals in Hayward for a burger on friday night and i think Ken and his wife are coming along as well. Greg and i are going to dinner tomorrow night if you want to hang out with us. :thumb:

Off topic now but... Ryan, are your axles and carrier still good in your D60 since it broke like that? I would guess that the axles might be bent and or the splines on the axles and the carrier be trash after the break.

I'm not sure yet.. I'm pretty sure the long side inner is broken. The tie rod is slightly bent, but it was from unloading the truck after i got it home. the tie rod got stuck against the pass. side ubolt and tweeked it a little but i think it might still be okay.. It looks like the hi steer arms got ovaled out, i might be having to drill em out and drop in some hardened inserts.. otherwise new hi steer arms would be in order..
I've got a bet going that i'm hoping the ARB carrier is still okay since they're supposed to be pretty damn tough (willyswanter said so) , kevin seems to think it got messed up when the housing cracked. When i pull it apart i'll take some pics and it will be known what got destroyed.

I haven't pulled it all apart yet.. motivation has been transfered to my camaro for the last few weeks now that school is out and i have some free time. I fired up my BBC last night. :saweet: Pics coming soon..

Back on topic;

all this talk of using DOM tubing and threaded "bung" ends, has got me to thinking again. And I still think for my money I want all the"beef" I can get, I'm just gonna stay with my 1.5 inch cold rolled steel bar, I had it cut length, both ends threaded (left and right) then installed my 3/4 inch heims with jam nuts. this thing is huge, and the strength rating is way past any DOM tubing I've seen, I'll look around for the specs, maybe get them posted. oh, and yeah, it's really heavy!

If you mean you have 1.5" solid bar stock and you think it is stronger than DOM you better do some research my friend.

OK,I just spent more time then I wanted too, looking at specs for DOM tubing, and cold rolled steel bar, both are pretty incredible.

DOM tubing 1026. 1.5 inch OD .3875 wall thickness = yield strength(what ever that means) = 75ksi

Cold rolled steel round stock 4150 alloy stressproofed.
yield strength(again whatever that means) = 160 ksi

I did'nt mean to start a pissin match, I'm just sayin that something else will break, long before this steering link of mine ever goes away!

No pissing match started.

Just that DOM tubing won't bend before solid bar stock will, that's all.

Ok, the search is over. Trevor at WFO has made me a tie rod and i will see it on monday. :thumb:

Should have gone Chromo. Mine is a tiny one at just 1 1/8" that sucker will bend about 8" and go right back to straight once the load is off.
:D
