Getting ready to swap axles to go to 4.10's.

Got the outers torn apart, and found this towards the inside of the axle tube.....up against the seal.

WTF is this? Really hoping its just some random pin that got in there, and not part of the center section. Doubt it would have made it into the axle past the seal, but it could have been dragged out stuck to the end of the axle shaft or something.

So, what say you, gurus?

What is this little pin part? Shown next to a wd40 can and on a roll of electrical tape for size reference.

PLEASE tell me this doesn't belong somewhere in the axle.

If that is from a 10 bolt front axle it could be the retaining pin for the cross shaft that holds the spider gears in place. They are usually a steel roll pin but who knows what someone in the past might have done.

Its from a 79 ish 10 bolt front.

The spider gear posts seem to be held in place by some sort of bolt. I looked for that.

I'll take a closer look though.

obviously a broken axleshaft. See thats why 10 bolts are so weak tiny axle shafts :dunno:

I got no clue man

honostly it looks like a piece of a gov lock but how it got in the tubes I got nothing

Is this one of those "Friday afternoon" things where the guy at the GM plant was like "hey guys, check out what I put in the axle tube. They will NEVER figure out how this got there!" :haha:

Your not the first one to find weird things when tearing apart a vehicle. Here's the thread I started back in '07 when I did my front breaks and shocks and found rocks in my break caliper.

Gov lock part was my first thought. Any chance a gov lock has been swapped into the axle?

Thats what I thought too. Nope, open carrier.

Strongly considering just pulling the gears from this axle, and having a shop swap them into my front.

Overall condition of this axle is less than desired....

Good lord. I found a spare set of keys with girly key chains under the back seat of one of my camaros and thought I was special. I know how that could get there though lol.

After talking with some gear shops, sounds like this whole assembly is getting cleaned and installed. Ill check around for where this pin came from, then hope for the best!

Thats not fair I didn't find one of those when I tore my front axle apart.

HA! Me neither! And I love finding and hanging on to useless crap I have no idea what or where it came from and still thinking I may need it some day so better not throw it out. :haha:

My first thought was part of a gov bomb, yes it will fit in a 10b front, but yours is open currently. If nothing else is in the housing or tubes I'd say good to go as long as the gear wear patterns are good.

I wouldn't go crazy over it. No one has proven it's from a gov bomb. For all we know it could be part of a tool and have fallen off a truck and hit the knuckle just right and landed in the tube forever ago just so you could find it. :dunno:

Agreed. The diff hadn't been open in a LONG time when i cracked it open.....and found lots of old fluid.

No water to speak of though, or metal. So, overall, think i'm going to rinse out hte center section with some motor oil, and fill'er back up with gear oil.
