12,000 Lb. Vortex Brute Series Winch

let me know when you get yours. i do wana go syn but not sure where to buy it from and whats a decent price

Synthetic rope will run from $2-300 depending on the length and size you get. Its lighter, safer and easier to deal with than cable, I'll never run steel cable on a winch ever again.

Heck i drug my blazer over the wheel chocks at one point, and it was in granny gear with the ebrake on! and the wheel chocks are the big heavy duty ones that they use on the fire trucks!

It doesn't take much to move the truck with it just being in gear with the e-brake. Chocks won't do much in a winching situation either so IMO that doesn't attest much to winch strength IMO.

I'm still not sold on any import winch other than the T-max. I would wait for a little more real world testing under heavier loads to determine that this winch is "ok"

Here's really where I'm getting with all this: when you need a winch and it doesn't work, its a huge PITA (for the Colorado Crew guys imagine how much longer Carnage would have been if my winch didn't work at all :doah:).

Of course the winch worked out of the box, nobody would buy them if they didn't. Its all about quality, longevity, etc. I would be hesitant to run a serious trail with anyone with a cheaper winch.

I have seen many Superwinch, Milemarker, Chinese brand x winches fail and have little to no faith in them.

They may be ok for some of you guys that hardly use them, don't use them hard, don't rely on them etc.

Where do you recommend buying the synthetic line? I ask, because I just bought a 12.5 T-Max from Jesse.

I got my synthetic from a rigging company by muddytazz . winchlines.com ( not winchline.com ) under 185 shipped for 3/8 dyneema blue line . He through in some yellow sleeves I stow away in the truck I could space out on the line and the eye fits through ( I run a huge shackle instead of a hook now ) , and had it to my work in AZ from Oregon in under 4 days :thumb:

I say even if it has the chance of not working, its better than no winch at all. A 12000lb winch, even lesser quality, shouldnt have to work too hard to move out rigs out of a situation, occationaly. I personaly wouldnt get one if you go wheeling every weekend and NEED a winch every trip. But for an average user that just sometimes needs it, it sounds like a good deal.

I have personaly used a come-along, and a 2500lb ATV winch that got me out of the situation. Im not saying I used the ideal equipment, just that for my past experiances just a little tug was all I needed to get moveing again.

Right now I have a ramsey 8000lb PTO winch with no line and its not installed on anything. Of corse my wheeling truck is far from ready to drive.

Please post up how the winch is doing every once and a while. I'm a little nervous about risking $350 to be the guinea pig (especially when I have other things I need to throw $$$ at - like getting my Blazer running).

And thanks for boldly going where no CK5er has gone before. :waytogo: We will watch and wait.

No problem i dont mind being the guinea pig! I must say that pulling my blazer over the wheel chocks was very impressive. maybe dragin around a stripped out wheeler is simple but my bumpers alone weigh 1000lbs. this is by far no light weight blazer. ask anyone who has seen it. my buddy was sitting in the truck with the brakes on, ebrake set and in granny gear. im willing to bet that just bout any of your trucks couldnt drag it without the wheel chocks let alone with them! it pulled the front wheels over it like i was rock crawling the swampers (tire flex) and they have 32 psi in them. Hey with a 2 year warrenty and $350.00 How can you beat that? But none the less i will keep you posted on its preformance. and for those of you that go wheeling every weekend and need to use a winch? think maybe you should save the money on the cheaper winch and put the extra money into building a better rig! lol

It is a 12K winch, it should be able to pull your truck around pretty easy. I didn't mean to sound too critical but for me a reliable winch is really important. Here's an example of an obstacle where the winch really needs to be working:

That's obviously not my truck, I only have video of mine on that obstacle. I realize that most of you guys don't use your winches like this but my 8274 has worked flawlessly for 25 years and you can pick them up cheap (~the same price as the new winch you bought). Just my .02 of course ;)

Snap! :haha:

I go wheeling once a month if that. So i dont see why this winch wouldnt do good. I dont go extrem rock climbing or anything at least not yet :D:D. We will see how well it does.. A friend of mine has a 8000 mile marker for over a year and he goes out almost every weekend and it's still going strong.

My only problem with the 8274 is its size. I'd like to tuck my winch (in the distant future when I get one) back under the grill. That isn't gonna happen with an 8274.

True, mine is as far back as it can go and it still sticks out a bit.

Still using it from time to time no problems so far. looking for a quick disconnect setup currently so i can keep it out of the weather. kind of a pain right now i have to disconnect the bat terminals each time i wana pull it off. i have it mounted in the hitch cradle right now, so i just need to find a nice set of quick disconnects and ill b good to go.

Could somebody list the seller of this? The previous links are now dead and a search for "Vortex Brute Series Winch" got nada.
