hey all, im in the middle of doing the disc swap and have a few questions. The bearings seem fine though I have not pulled them out of the hubs but they move smoothly without any abrassive feel to them and the seal on the back seems fine as well. The bearings dont seem to have any grease on them but are pretty coated with diff fluid. Should I apply some grease to the bearings?

Also The socket I got for the spindle actually ended up working. It didnt on the one I tested it on though wierd. Anyway this didnt have the 6 tabs holding the spindle nut in place. It had a 1/4 inch wide and maybe 3/4 inch long metal piece that slid in between the spindle and the spindle nut and that was retained by a snapring.

Doing the 10 bolt front that had an outer spindle nut, a washer then a inner nut then going to the 14 bolt that has 1 spindle nut retained by a piece of metal and a snap ring Im just worried im nut missing something.

Anyway im off to buy some bolt for the brackets

The bearings are lubed by the diff fluid, don't grease them.

You're spindle lock setup sounds wierd, pictures will help.

There are two styles of hubs, one has the adjusting nut & lock nut and the other, like the one you have just has the one nut.
Adjust the bearings, line up the slot and install the key, install snap ring to hold it in place.

Full floating axles do not require grease on the bearings, they are lubed by the gear oil.
Prelube the bearings before assembly with gear lube, install the inner bearing and a new seal. (Pull the wheel replace the seal).

Install hub and fill hub with gear lube before installing the outer bearing.
Torque hub bearing to specs and install axle shaft.

Your spindle lock is normal, just newer. I have one of those on a 14bff wide dually off an IFS truck (i.e. '88+), and the other two-part style on the older '70's trucks.

ahh cool, The 10 bolt front was such a pain in the butt compared to the 14 bolt. Thanks for the info guys

The snap ring just retains the key and the key keeps the spindle nut from rotating correct? I have heard of that set-up but not seen it.

FYI, I tried to swap in the single spindle nut setup on my truck today, but there were not enough threads on the spindle to install the snap ring(actually, no threads past the nut). had to go reuse the old style

Something must be wrong with your set-up somewhere then. There is no difference in the spindles between the two types of lock nuts that were used. Did you perhaps have your bearing races out of the hubs at some point recently? If so then the outer race is not seated back down correctly against the snap ring and you'll have a huge disaster pretty quick (assuming that's the reason).

All the spindles on 14ff have a square keyway slot machined into the spindle since the two nut type use a washer with a "tang" that locates in that keyway slot to keep the washer from rotating.

aaaa...theres no machined groove for snap ring? wonder if you can discard snap ring then and jamb nut the retaining washer on newer style

Don't see why not I put Dana 60 nuts and washers on my 14FF and they are the double nut style with the pin and washer with holes around it.

I only need 1 socket now to work on any hub on my truck.

but can you mix em...older style jamb nut w/newer style retainer? just throw out snap ring and replace w/ another nut

sanddawg...are you saying 14bff and d60 aren't the same 6 prong pattern, i know 14bff has rounded bottom in slots, or are they totally diff...requiring diff sockets?

My 60 only has 4 prongs so my 14FF has 4 prong now too. I had to turn down my socket about .100" since the opening in the 14FF hub is smaller than a 60 hub but that was free at work.

My 14FF had the 6 prong nut but the grooves were in the face not the u shaped ones the newer style had. It also had the lock washer that had to be bent into the inner nut to lock it down. It really was a pain in the ass and the washer was only good for a couple of times before the tabs started to break from fatigue.

aaaa...i thought all d60 was 6 prong, i haven't torn into my front yet, does d60 indeed have 4 prong? that would explain why the 4 prong at big box stores said 3/4/1 ton...i was argueing w/ them 1 ton had 6
