Who here is running 140 with a v belt?
If so how many belts?
What width belt?
Do you get slippage?

Hmm I'm skipping a belt on 100amp when aux battery is low. May be I just need a new belt.
I need to move up to 140 amps
To many fans.
Front and rear ac, with 10" condenser fan, Holley fuel pump.
8" remote trans cooler fan, portable electric cooler, and lamps. Under 700 rpm volt meter read @ 6v, barely 13 @ 1k rpm.

Mine will kill the engine at idle from load when pulling hard with the winch. A little rpm keeps it running.

I've got single v belt on both the crew cab and C10 with 140a Powermaster alternators. Haven't had any belt issues. And that's considering some hard winching with the crew cab. The C10 runs Windstar fans and A/C.

I have a CS140 alternator on my K5 with v-belts. You have to keep it pretty tight to avoid is squealing but works good. Keep in mind that not all "140 amp" rated alternators are equivalent. It's kind of like a big block versus turbo 4 cylinder....they will make the same peak power but the big block makes it a 3,500 rpm and the 4 cylinder at 8,000 rpm.

The tag on my Powermaster alternator said it was bench tested at 100 amps at idle.

Yeah mine is the Powermaster 105 iirc. gonna fit a 7/16" wide belt new tighten it down good, I have concerns about really tight and wiping out the bearings.
I think I may be do for a wiring up grade too.

I just put a Powermaster on my C10 and it had specific instructions about belt tension. They seemed more concerned about being too loose. IIRC it said the belt should be tight enough it won't slip if you try to rotate the nut on the pulley.

as a marine guy, it's V-belts in general.. they just suck compared to a serp setup...... stretch and slippage... when do you see serps do either?

Yep. V-belts are so 1917 haha. I have serpentine on everything.

Yes this has been my test for well forever, 40 years maybe. I would always see the high amp alts with 2 v belts. I think I need a 140 but maybe wiring upgrade, will get me what I need.

Anecdotal, I'm running a 105A CS-130 with the "semi-serpentine" ribbed belt, and I've had it slip under a couple occasions. One, the wiring adapter connector came loose so the alternator was trying to put out who knows how much, luckily it was in the driveway, and the other when I had to replace the belt in the woods and didn't have tools handy to really snug it down. Even with minimal electrical load the thing screamed and chewed the belt down. Made it home, but the engine bay was covered in rubber dust.

#tensionerpulleyFTW

that said, it is a fail point added... tho an extreme environment, can't tell you how many idler and tensioner pullies we put on the mercs in the boats....

I remember when the 140 amp from a pontiac trans sport was the hot ticket.
