14ff Hub Failure

Got the gears swapped over, but Scott got tied up at home. Going to put the axle in tomorrow, and give the gear pattern a final look while in the truck.

I'm at the end of a long day searching for parts and working in the garage. I couldn't' get anything to show a gear pattern, but I may be overthinking it. Don't think i'm preloading it enough when turning, but hard to do it alone. I'm sure scott will straighten me out tomorrow.

Thanks!

Got a pattern read. Shape looks off, but at least it's centered. Going to check backlash with Scott tonight. Think it's a bit loose. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1419984117.984663.jpg

Scott and I will decide how comfortable we are with the set up. If we aren't confident, I have a guy that will check it on Monday.

I lied. That is a pattern on the coast side. I'm and idiot. We'll rerun a pattern tonight.

Scott dropped by and helped me set the backlash.

Thanks scott!

It was at about 0.019, got it into the acceptable range.

Now, to get the rest of it back together. Dropped it back on its wheels to keep the neighborhood happy, but need to bleed brakes, swap a backing plate/brake setup around, and get it filled up with fluid.
Progress!

I'm sure that worst case scenario, if you got it in the ballpark, it would still last many thousands of miles.

I told Darren that the worst case is the gears howl some but will run like that forever. Backlash was at .019" when I checked it but was able to get it down to .006". :thumb:

Nice work! :thumb: When I swapped in my axle it came with .008" backlash. So I opted not to touch it.

How long 'till the truck gets back on the road?

The plan was to get it back together the night that scott helped me. Then, i started to cross thread a few diff cover bolts, and decided I had had enough.

Dropped the truck back onto its wheels, took it off the stands, and gave up for the weekend.

Got home last night, and got it back together today.

Even swapped that backwards backing plate to the correct one, Scott!

So far, I think i have another round of bleeding to do, and some drum adjustment, but overall, I think we are back in business! Had the truck up to 65 briefly, and the gears are near silent. A little noise when coasting, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Thanks guys! And more importantly, thanks for the gear setup help scott! I learned how to setup 14FF gears (roughly), and saved some $$.

I only took it a few miles today, but will drive it further and further this week to give it the real test.

Well, been driving it weekend while i was home, and drove it up the mtn on Sunday.
Good to go!

thanks everyone! Having the truck up here sure helps it feel like home!
