Chevy305 said:Not sure if this question has been answered, but I am trying to figure out how I can do a 14bSF 8 to 6 lug swap and keep my drum brakes:
What are the dimentions on the 6 lug 14bSF drums and the 8 lug drums? The axel in question is a 86 3/4ton 14bSF that is 8 lug. Can the newer 6 lug drums fit over the older 8 lug style drum brakes?
loafer said:The 8-lug 14 bolt SF came with both 11" and 13" brakes. The 6-lug drums are 11". So yes, they will fit if you have a 11" brakes on your 8-lug. This is exactly what I did for my swap.

I have a 8 lug axle from a 90 2500 Burb that I am converting to 6 lug and putting into my 98 1/2ton so its all apart if anybody wants any measurements or whatever....
JDNobodi said:Can you explain why you put spacers behind the backing plate?
For clarification, you put later model axle shafts (88 and up) into an early model housing (80/88).
daleearnhardt01 said:The IFS 6 lug shafts are longer I believe so in order for everything to line up the backing plate needs to be spaced out. Also the bearing surface on the shaft doesnt line up perfectly with the axle bearing....

Now I assume that I use the same backing plate for the six lug stuff since I have the 11" brakes?
