14SF "tech" info

Bringing it back from the dead...

Ok so I just aquired a set of 6 lug 14bsf axel shafts, backing plates, and drums from a 90s era 2wd 2500 GMC pickup. My plan is to swap these 6 lug parts onto an 80s era 4wd 14bsf so it will bolt up underneath my truck all nicely without having to relocate shock mounts and spring perches and so I can keep my cool 6 lug wheels.

So my question is: Since the axel shafts that I got are from a 2wd, does that make them too short to swap into an 80s era 4wd 14bsf out of a pickup? I'm just worried that I got the wrong length shafts to swap in...

Does anybody know?

Are the newer body style 2wd 6 lug shafts the same length as the older style 4wd shafts?

Too short.....

Pick up some Yukon alloys for 72 a pop like I did, junkyards wanted 100-150 for a used set so for me it was a no brainer...

$72?!?!?! :eek1: Where the hell did you find those? The cheapest I can find them for is $99.95 at LMC...

Alright guys need to know where to get new wheel cylinder links/pins whatever..... Dealer says they cant get em, none of the wholesale parts houses I deal with can get them, only place that I see might have them is Advance...

Maybe somebody can answer this, are these links different in length between different sized brakes? AKA can I use the links that came off the 8 lug 14SF 13" brakes on the smaller 6 lug stuff? The links fit into the new cylinders fine but I wasnt sure if they would work correctly or not...

Do you have the means to cross-check part numbers? I wonder if you could use some 10/12 bolt brake parts.

Edit-I did some cross checking on LMC and the 78/91 shoes are the same as the 88/98 for the same size brakes. The drums are different.

Thats my next plan of attack...

Well looks like my progress has come to an abrupt halt..

Basically this axle is not going to work to put it bluntly. I slid the shafts in and put a drum on to see how much I needed to space out the backing plate to line everything up... Well backing plate flange is sitting about 1/2" or more inside the drum.... :doah:

Im not sure how I screwed this one up, I measured this axle and it was 68" WMS. I wish I hadnt thrown away the old 8 lug drums so I could compare what the problem is.. The old 8 lug shafts are longer so something funky is going on with the brakes on this one..

Glad all these new brake parts from GM arent returnable since they are special order :o

EDIT: Anybody have an axle in a condition to measure the distance from the flange to the end of the tube??

It probably varies... There are 2 different 13" drums used on the 81-87 8-lug 14bSF.

Early version ('81)

later version ('84)

You may want to consider grinding the welds off the backing plate flange and moving them.

Yep thats exactly what I thought the problem would be... I did not realize there were 2 different drum depths. Good thing I only paid a $1 for this housing... But yeah Ill either move the flanges or get another axle..

Let me get this straight. The backing plate flange is farther out on the tube? If that's the case, the Pre-88 10 bolts have the same shoe part number as the post-88 14bsf 6 lug. The post-88 10 bolt looks like to have smaller brakes, but that don't matter. My point is to put the pre-88 10 bolt drums on if the flange is farther out.

Yeah that still leaves me with 200 bucks of non returnable GM parts along with needing to purchase 10 bolt backing plates and all.. It will be way cheaper for me to just move these flanges or find another cheap housing..

I had thought about your idea though, it would work but now its just a monetary issue..

No, no, no, leave the 14bolt backing plates on and see if pre-88 10 bolt drums would fit. It would help if you had pictures of your problem. I'm curious to see what's happening.
****, I forgot how much 14bsf drums are, and I just paid for a set last April.

I see what you are saying now, theoretically it should work. Im going to have to go pick up a drum from the store tomorrow and try.

Luckly I can return the 14 bolt drums, they arent from GM..

As far as what is going on now, I slid a shaft in and put one stud in and slid the drum on, there is no backing plate on right now so the drum when full seated on the axle flange was over top the backing plate flange.

Alright those 10 bolt drums will work however, the lug holes in the drums are too small for the M14 studs to fit through. Anybody know a place where I can get a stud with a .625 knurl diameter but only 7/16 on the actual stud part?

Can I just drill the holes out in the drums???
