15x8 wheel backspacing for 1988 Blazer 3.5 or 2.75

[ QUOTE ]
Oh ok, i thought you had the 3.73 15x8s and didn't like them. Those would have been perfect.

If you replied to me , I HAD 3.08's and 15x8's , and it was bearable gearing wise . I HAVE 3.73's now with same rims and tires and love them . I have ANOTHER set of 15x8's I am offering ax88k5 so he can save money and get a locker or something /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

The problem with running 2.75" or 2.5" BS on a 1/2 or 3/4 ton front axle is you will put alot more stress on your ball joints.

Rob (therobzilla) and Matt (az-k5) have experience with the 2.75" BS rims. They where out ball joints every 3-4 months with hard wheeling. Marv probably had the same problem on his green blazer.

I am running 4.125" BS on my truck and I have about 6 months and 5 four wheeling trips on my truck and my balljoints are still ok for now. If I was going to buy rims again for my truck I would get a set of 3.5" or 3.75" rims to get the tires out farther to help keep the truck off the body when I am rockcrawling.

It's not that I didn't like the 3.75 back spacing. It is just really close to my Tie Rod about .25 to the wheel and I didn't want to have any problems with tire weights. So ProComp said they could make the back spacing 3.5 or step it up to 2.75 in exchange for the 3.75bs wheels I allready purchased. I just would like to have the best pratical backspacing that everyone recommends using with a 15x8 wheel with 35x12.5x15's.

I run 4.125 BS fine on my truck. It is a 3/4 ton front though. Not sure if that is a difference or not.

3.5" or 3.75" should be ok.

I would not run 2.75" BS unless you like replacing your balljoints on a semiregular basis.

Honestly a tire doesn't really need the inside weights to balance out pretty well. I ran no inside weights on my old 35" BFG MT's. I also don't have outside weight on my 35" MTR's right now because they rip off when I am rockcrawling. The truck will do 80mph without any noticable vibs from the tires.

[/ QUOTE ]The only reason I didn't put the 15x8 with 3.75 backspacings on is because I went to discount to have them mounted and balanced. Discount told me that they were to close to my tie rod about .25 inch and I wouldn't be able to wieght the inside of the wheel and only tape weight them inside and I would not get a great balance and have troble with woble and vibs. So I was looking into different BS. I can have the 3.75 exchanged for 3.5 and I will have alittle more room between tie rod and wheel about .5 inch. I think this is the Ideal thing for me to do after what all of you guys have told me. Thanks everyone.

Stock BS should be around 4.125" so I don't see why 3.75" wouldn't work. I don't know where you live but go to the Discount tire on 43ave & Glendale. Deal with Matt Fennemore. He is a member here and a good guy who won't give you any bullshit about anything. He knows his stuff and when you see his truck you will realize that.

Call ahead to make sure he works that day (he always works Saturdays).

Thanks Harley I'm sick of peoples BS. I've been getting a lot of that latly. this site is awesome. Thanks for all the help.
I think that is strange that a stock backspacing would be 4.125 because I know if I put that backspacing on my 88 Blazer it would definetly hit the tie rod. Maybe in 88 the tie rod is longer.Who knows? because the 3.75 was about a quarter of an inch from the tie rod. That's why I want to go with 3.5 to be safe. Thanks Again.

Hey this is AZ88K5 I might take you up on those wheels. What do you want for them or your offering them free? 15x8 with what backspacing? 3.75?

I have to measure when I get home to be sure . 50.00 like mentioned earlier . We can PM each other , I am in Mesa , but could bring to my work in Scottsdale /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

The 3.75 backspacing will work fine, that's what I was trying to ask you in the first place.

I have them on my own rig!!

I just remeasured the rims in my garage . Steel Ralleys are approx 4 inches from edge to wheel mounting surface and they are 15x8 . 3.75 and 15x7 is the Aluminum ones , also sitting in my garage /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

First welcome to the board, where about do ya live?

I am running 15 x 8 x 3.75 wheels with 35 x 12.5 MTRs it is on a ¾-ton front axle, which is the same as a ½-ton except for the knuckle outers. Other than grinding down the ¾-ton brake calibers, (this is not needed with ½-ton axle). I have done nothing else to the axle and I have no problems. As Harley said the farther out you stick the wheel the more wear and tear you will put on the steering components.

Good luck,

The 3.75" BS would also be better because they protect your locking hubs better from rock rash. Mine are inside the rim and tire but not by much. I am kind of open to rock rash on the hubs. As you can see with Pauls rims and tires his hubs are more open to rock rash then myself. His truck is not a rock truck for the most part so it is not a big deal to him but for me it is a concern.

True , but it didn't sound like he beat up on his truck like an Amigo type ( complimeting you ) , and I do scrape them once in awhile but its a dual purpose truck , and soon enough I won't even have locking hubs on the project when I can afford a trailer in a couple years /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Stock backspacing for the 8 inch GM rallys is very close to 3.5". Backspacing is measured from where the tire seats on the inside bead to the mounting surface.

This is AZ88K5 I'm in Prescott AZ! Thanks for all the help guys i'm going to go with the 3.5 backspacing.

uh oh, you live close to Rollmaster Juan and Thrashmaster Fred. They live in the Prescott area too. They drive some built K5's and aren't affraid to wheel the living hell out of them. Juan drives a blue and grey chopped up tube K5 and Fred drives a red and white K5, yellow K10, or yellow K30 dually. Both great guys but if you go wheeling with them you might want to emphasis which parts of your truck you want intact when it is over. Don't say you weren't worned. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

I'm really good friends with Rollmaster Juan. He's the guy that told me to become a member to this website. He is crazy as hell in his K5 what's left of the original body. Step by step we are working on my Blazer.
