18" Hutchinson double bead locks...

Do you know how many people run non DOT beadlocks in this sport? A literal **** ton, nothing ever happens to them? why does yours need to be DOT?

i know a lot of people do it, but that still doesn´t make it legal! Sure, as long as no cop really knows, they might not care, but once you get into an accident, the insurance won´t pay for anything if they find out.
Asside from that, since the truck might at some day go overseas, it needs to approved. In europe, Germany even more, every part on your vehicle needs to be tested and approved by the TÜV. If just one part is without approval, the entire vehicle will not get a registration.
therefore, all the lights, wheels, tires etc on MY rig are going to be fully legal and approved.

So for a production run of 25 wheels, Hutchinson will spend the time and effort (and money) to get this new design "DOT Approved".....

You SURE about that?

I know their own designs are DOT legal, but they sell plenty of wheels to ammortize those certification costs against. Seems hard to believe they would agree to get you a DOT approval even for the kind of money you'd be spending for a one-off batch of wheels.

Yes 100% sure. That was one of the things for me that was a must! This price would include a full DOT aproval! I have that in written form via email from Hutchinson directly. The entire CAD model is already done too.

Stazworks are steel as far as I know, way too heavy! I want a beadlock that is not much heavier than a normal wheel! Plus they are not DOT approved, and the truck needs to stay street legal...

i can ask Hutchinson to verify this here, but I doubt they will.. They pretty much leave it up to me to find enough people. But if someone is interested, I can give you the email address of the guy at Hutchinson for verification....
Having owned a set of aluminum Hutchinson dual beadlock wheels in the past (16" rim size), I can say you're gonna be surprised at the weight of these wheels you want made. I can almost guarantee you that they will be very close in the same weight range as a steel wheel. How, you ask? Hutchinson wheels are THICK and that adds weight to the overall design.

I can see your reaction after receiving the wheels once they're made and you lifting the boxes to find out they're heavier than you expected. Do some homework: ask Hutchinson how much these wheels weigh.

Then go get some steel wheels fabbed up for a fraction of the cost. Your wallet will thank you.

Another benefit to a steel wheel is, if you slam it against a rock you can grap a BFH out of the truck and pound it back into shape for the rest of the trail, most aluminum you can't do that, or if you try to it can crack the wheel itself since aluminum is so soft compared to steel.

I'm not trying to crap on your parade here, but your idea is a novelty. Look at how many people have the dollars for a set of them. I know i'd have to save for a long time to get enough loot for a set of them.

Based on the finished CAD model, remember the normal Hutchinsons are cast, this is forged.... The total wheel weight is 33.5 lbs... and that is very light for a double bead lock. Numbers are from hutchinson direct. 20% lighter than there current 17" cast wheel.....

Why the big silly brakes?

Martin

Big truck and lots of power needs big brakes. All truck brakes from the factory back then were a yoke! And more rotating mass means better brakes are needed. And to not upgrade the brakes 5 times I went with the biggest ones once and never have to think about it again!

Plus these never run hot.. they are jsut too big.....

Trust me, i have to save for some time too, but i put so much into the truck already that I´m not gonna skimp out on the wheels now.

You are right about the bent wheel, but that is why I want a matching spare. Plus, this wheel has an outer ring that is bolted to the inner part that houses the spider. Therefore, if the outside lip gets damaged, you can just exchenge that and keep the larger part of the wheel. you could even dimount a tire and leave the back half ogf the wheel on the truck!

I know I´m crazy, but Ive done my math on this before even contactin Hutchinson....

Ok, just got the quote back from Hutchinson.. the 18" version would be way too expensive....

We´re checking if it is in any way possible to make a 17" wheel fit the big brakes. As soon as I get info on that, I´ll let you know....

Getting more interested....... Make it hold a classic Chevy hubcap and you've got a winner! :waytogo:

so why would anyone be interested in dropping that much money on wheels without knowing what they look like? pictures kinda seem necessary dont you think?

you are right. I still didn´t ge the confirmation fom Hutchinso to show the pictures though. If it were me, I´d post hem, but I don´t wanna cause any trouble doing so. If I don´t hear back from then til monday about that, I´ll post the pic... fair enough?

Not sure I understand the reason behind the wheel choice???

If its the wheel design and appearance I sort of get it, but if its just for true double beadlock there are other, more affordable choices.

You can run steel wheels with Inner Air Beadlocks ($100/wheel)and still be ale to use factory hub caps..??

Is the plan to wheel the rig hard, or would they be more for "bling"??:dunno:

It's been said before, but I will say it again, you are asking people to plunk down $4,000 for a set of wheels with:
1. no picture of the wheel
2. no official documentation from Hutchinson
3. that is just crazy expensive

If they are requiring a minimum of 25 wheels be ordered I would have to assume it would need to be prepaid....just can't have several people put a post on the internet saying "sure, I'll take a set".

The hub cap option would be for bling only, not even sure if that would work with the wheel design, BUT the rest would not be for bling. Sure it would be a vehicle that sees street as much as off road, but I wouldn´t baby it off road...

So the reasons are:

1. needs to fit my big brakes

2. should be strong and as light as possible; less rotationg mass (so steel is out of the question)

3. Sure it would be cool to have "my" design made

4. They would be DOT legal, most others are not!

Ok, if people were interested, of course it would go through Hutchinson directly. The ones interested would get the peoples contact email that I´m dealing with right now. That way they could confirm all of this. And like I posted before, I need the OK from Hutchinson to post the desing, I can´t just do it and get in trouble for it.

If someone is REALLY interested, PM me your email and I can forward the entire email conversation with Hutchinson, no problem....

You may as well post pics here now because I highly doubt anyone cares to spend that kind of money on wheels this expensive and by the time Hutch "finds out" that you posted pics, it will be days, weeks, or months later and by then they won't give a crap and will likely be happy that someone posted them in order to get free advertisement.

So just post them up so we can drool over them. Thats about all we're gonna be able to do here for you. Sorry none of us are rich enough to help you meet the minimum 25 criteria.
