1945 Willys MB. Part 5, Actually doing things

Low slung big tired Willys Mb
I just bought a tool like that to do inner axle seals on a Super Duty Dana 50 from Torque King 4x4. They have to go to a certain depth in the housing.

I just bought a tool like that to do inner axle seals on a Super Duty Dana 50 from Torque King 4x4. They have to go to a certain depth in the housing.
They probably have a specified depth. I have installed a dozen or so sets flush with the tube end with no leaks. The seal surface, at least on the axle shafts I have messed with, is 1.5" wide or so. plenty of room for error there.

From what I read on mine the super duty 60 goes flush the 50 a certain depth. I did them flush the first time then had a comeback and bought the tool. Sucked to redo it but it was side work for my boss/friend so he understood.

Oh boy lots to update. Its been a long winter and a lot got accomplished. Short list includes, chopping and stretching the top, finishing the floor/trans tunnel, re gearing axles, full floating the rear axle, and a possible GM TBI swap.

Lets start with the roof. It got chopped 3" and stretched 6" The roof is now 72" from the ground which is about the roof height of a stock base model wrangler. Rockers are 24.5" from the ground, makes for a pretty sleek and lean look I think. The extra 6" stretch finally lets me put my seats down low where I originally planned to put them. The problem with the original roof was my head was right at the back wall when my seats were low.

Next came the trans tunnel. I never finished the floor because I wanted to just drive the damn thing. Plus I wanted to wait till I got an overdrive so I could build around it. Well the overdrive is on order with a projected date in late july. So I got tired of waiting. Built a bit of structure out of steel and skinned with aluminum. After that was finishing my front fenders. These finders got cut and raised 3" which pushed them and the grill forward 1.5ish inches. I had to cut out an area to clear my battery and like most things in life, I just started cutting and left it for future meIMG_4039.jpeg

My favorite project has been full floating my rear dana 44. I got some adapters that take front dana 44 spindles, press and weld onto the axle tube. Had dutchman make me some 30 spline 4340 shafts. Designed and laser cut some brake brackets to use ford electric emergency brake calipers and re drilled a Samurai disks for 6x5.5. I ran into some problems with my nitro drive slugs. they used a stupid design in my opnion so I had to shave a bunch off the cap, make spacers and find a clip to retain the drive slug.

And for the TBI swap. My Fitech shit the bed a month ago. only 10 months old with 2k miles on it. It was driving one day, the next day it wouldn't start. It decided to stop firing the injectors for some reason. Everything else was correct and it would run fine if i bottle fed it gas. Sent that off to warranty and they replaced/upgraded the ecu and harness. Still waiting for it to get back to me but Iv lost confidence in it really. I ran to my local junk yard and pulled a tbi kit. Got harness, ecu, and throttle body for a few bucks. Designed and cut a adapter to my 4150 intake manifold. Trimmed up the harness and it fired right up. I am using a 5.0 throttle body which is the same as the 4.3 but larger injectors. I figured the larger injectors would help with my vastly superior vortec heads, cam, and intake.

I don't know if Ill swap to tbi or keep the fitech. Ill need to run a fuel return for the TBI swap and should probably get a chip burned. It woudl be nice to sell the fitech for a chunk of change.

Many years ago, around 1972 or so, when I was using my dual rear wheel '60 CJ5 as a DD, I saw another CJ5 with a full float rear end. Since his, like mine, had the F-head "Hurricane" engine, you pretty well maxed out at 60mph, with the top off and a tailwind. So whenever either of us had to take our Jeeps on a long trip, we towed them.
I always just put the transfer case in neutral, and unlocked the front hubs. Never had a problem. But I always wanted to convert mine to full floater like his because he put locking hubs on the rear axle.
When it came time to tow, he just unlocked the rear hubs, and nothing else spun. I never got a chance to see how his setup was built, but with the custom made adapters I had had built to add the rear duals, locking hubs would not have fit inside the adapters without modifying the adapters.
They worked so well as is, I did not want to run the risk of problems.
But, the full float axle wheel bearings would certainly have stood up better to the added load of the duals than the stock axle bearings did.
I kept them well greased, since they did not oil from the diff, but I still had to replace them about once a year.

Decided to commit myself to using GM TBI. made a harness to run a 7427 pcm that way I could use it to control my Efan. Ive got about 1500 miles on it so far with no issues. I also got it weighed. 3300Lbs with a full tank of fuel.

Got out to do some wheeling today. I couldn't be happier with the TBI and 5.38 gears mixed with 3.15 in the transfer case. Still managed to get stuck though.
