Many years ago, around 1972 or so, when I was using my dual rear wheel '60 CJ5 as a DD, I saw another CJ5 with a full float rear end. Since his, like mine, had the F-head "Hurricane" engine, you pretty well maxed out at 60mph, with the top off and a tailwind. So whenever either of us had to take our Jeeps on a long trip, we towed them.
I always just put the transfer case in neutral, and unlocked the front hubs. Never had a problem. But I always wanted to convert mine to full floater like his because he put locking hubs on the rear axle.
When it came time to tow, he just unlocked the rear hubs, and nothing else spun. I never got a chance to see how his setup was built, but with the custom made adapters I had had built to add the rear duals, locking hubs would not have fit inside the adapters without modifying the adapters.
They worked so well as is, I did not want to run the risk of problems.
But, the full float axle wheel bearings would certainly have stood up better to the added load of the duals than the stock axle bearings did.
I kept them well greased, since they did not oil from the diff, but I still had to replace them about once a year.
