1964 Nova Wagon “Plank”

Nova
Maybe, but trucks seem to always have that mirror so I don’t think it’s ruined. I plan to drive it, so I want the mirror because chances are 2,439% higher in todays traffic there will be an idiot next to me :D What gives it character will stay… drip molding, trim, stainless, handles, window crank, etc etc. You know, all that stuff people like to shave off :(

Lots of SOS and 0000 steel wool plus a shiton of elbow grease/simple green. I don’t see painting this. Falling for the “patina” it has. Clear the purity, restore the rest, be done. Cleaned up the grill/bumper some, felt like polishing a turd cause it’s not staying, however it can shine for now.

Changed the headlights. Haven’t found the battery draw yet, busy fixing and cleaning. Installed a neutral/reverse switch. That would have felt better had those LEDs worked out. Done though.

Paint code 920-9 which I think is an Autumn Gold or something. Door jams and such make me think so too. Not sure what the light blue and green is. Top feels like blue though it’s got some brown on it. I haven’t done much to the sides yet, the shear amount of rust and dirt I have washed off the rags is crazy. I’ve only cleaned above the trim so far. I will clean below but lightly, don’t want a lot of blue down there.

Oh also I’ve only done steel wool cleaning. Before I rag some clear on it, what should I do first?

That blueish is probably the primer. The underside of my '57 Pontiac there were large areas that were a blueish almost green kinda color that was the underside primer.

Are you going to use the Vise Grip Garage wipe on clear coat stuff? I think you just clean it as you have, wipe it with a tack rag and then wipe on the clear.

He has a “Shine Juice” that you put on a couple times a year. Ahahaha and yes, I bought some of his other stuff that uses a hardener but rag application is still an option. Probably same as Poppy’s stuff. Should I do a couple passes of mineral spirits?

Also, installed the sound system. JBL party box haha

His quote un quote "shine juice" is just boiled linseed oil.

I'm am not a patina guy.
I think it's stupid and at this point in time it's also played out.
Although i do understand your trying to get by with a shoestring budget.
So I would just suggest buying a cheap HVLP gun and some clear and doing it the right way.
Probably can do it for less then a 100 bucks.
And then you don't have to dick around with redoing 2-3 times a year.

To me, you spend all this time and money and your ride still looks like shit?
I don't get it.
Thanks for nothing David freiburger and his ratty muscle car crap. Lol.
I just never understood it.

This car might look ok with a patina Clearcoat.
Removing that roof rust was a huge improvement!

I appreciate a nice paint job, but I don't want the stress of having a nice paint job. I am OK with patina, as long as it's legit. I do not care for Faux-Tina...

I'd skip the shine juice and clear coat it...that shine juice will attract all the dirt and bugs and everything else, it's sticky.

Yeah, I bought the product with a hardener for it, so 2 part. Should dry up hard like a normal clear coat. It’s a matte finish so I think I can get away with rag application. Gloss would be different. I’ll tape up the trim and such, then lather it on :D

So figured out the LED lens are for a coupe/sedan. The wagon is actually different, which surprises me. The bezel difference is hardly noticeable but it is :( Nobody offers LED boards or lenses for a wagon. Even if I went boards, I still need new lenses.

So I’ve ordered some lenses for the back, which ended up costing as much as the LED ones because “special wagon”. I’ve also ordered some 3157 bulb sockets to see if I can retrofit them into the stock bezels. I want a ground wire and something more secure, I think I can make it work but won’t know for sure till the socket is in my hands. It’s how I made the harness so I will do that for reverse lights too.

Wash the car thoroughly with DAWN dish soap before application of clear.
I don’t mind original patina thats been minimized like you are doing, but the fake stuff always sucks.
And I agree w Rene’ having a nice paintjob makes you worry about it!

I found a Walking Dead “Daryl” keychain in my stash that couldn’t be sold because the box was bad. Box was brown spotted like dirt. “Daryl” was brief but it didn’t feel like it came natural. (Still on the cars keys) But “Plank” came to me while my younger brother and Mom were at the house. As a fan of the original Ed Edd n Eddy, brother too and Mom remembering the character, it was settled. :D

I too like real patina on a classic driver, don't want to worry about a scratch or dent.
A nice restoration of a muscle car would be different, I want a decent paint job

So instead of fixing the battery draw/drain properly… I’m just going to throw a large battery disconnect switch in there. I think janky is just the right amount of work needed haha. Should I cut the positive or negative going to the battery?

I just can’t go through the wiring right now. It might even be the old alternator covered in PS fluid, who knows. :D I’ll get to that eventually.

I would do the positive
