1968 Vette build for the Mrs

Made a ton of progress, but have been pathetic about taking pictures. That said, big win last weekend. We installed the FiTech efi, set a base timing and fired this NASTY big block up. Realized right at the end of this video that there were no pipes on it and it was scavenging fresh air to the O2 sensor, making it think it was lean... Still waiting on my damn radiator that I ordered over a month ago... should have it Tuesday, so we can actually run it and time it for real. Also, dropped another $1300 for rear spindles, spindle bearing cases, dust shields, half shafts, etc. This damn car is a pain in the ass!

Fokers gotta be deafening w them open headers!
Sure did you get the rear driveline parts from?
Well done Sean!

Yeah, we were both a little shell shocked after I cut it off. I'm sure the neighborhood loves us!!!

Got the rear end stuff from Duntov. I went through the diff a couple weeks ago and everything looks good. Checked end play, pattern and everything and resealed it. Can't justify the $$$ for a 12 bolt upgrade at this point. I won't be launching it, so hopefully it holds up a while. Guess we'll see!

Ways to go still, but it's getting there. Hopefully we can take a (slightly illegal) test drive in a couple of weeks. I thought my long-waits for parts would end once I got out of Hawaii...

No. But, hopefully it have the wherewithal to have the clutch fully out, and maybe 2 grand before I stand on it and boil these 315's! :haha:

Might take some decent practice before you can really launch that beast.

I see a couple of sets of those rear tires in your near future. Might wanna start looking for specials

I think if you keep it on the street (especially asphalt) you'll be ok...smooth concrete might hurt it sooner than later, prepped launches, I'd give it 3!

I was a bad person...didn't update this thread nearly enough! So here's the cliffs notes of the rabbit hole adventure the car took us down. We got the "427" running. Got the rear end all rebuilt, new u-joints in the driveshaft, new 3" half shafts, trailing arms, bearings, brakes, lines, fuel lines, body mounts done. Put the inserts in the pipes and put them on. Drove the car around the block twice after fighting to get the clutch to release after sitting for years and blew the engine. Headgaskets puked everywhere. So I tore the top end off and found a number of interesting things. First, it was put together terribly. Some of the head studs were ultra tight, some were barely finger tight. So no surprise it failed. But I also found that the heads had been cut for o-rings, but none were present. The pistons were huge domed things. After I got this deep I said screw it, we're not fixing this since it needs different pistons to be pump gas friendly and everything else. After a week or two of mulling over things, being mad, etc we had a great idea. The 468 in the blazer runs like a raped ape and was actively trying to beer can the truck. Instead of continuing to let it, I'd just swap it to the vette and repower the blazer. So one night after work I pulled the short block out of the car and found that it was actually a 454 block from a 70s truck. But the crank was a stock cast 396/427 crank. It had forged manley rods in it, and the huge domed pistons. Freaking weird. :dunno:

Anyways, that weekend I pulled the front clip off the blazer, yanked the engine out, swapped the bellhousings and clutch/flywheel and dropped it in the car. Sunday I finished everything up and drove it around the block. The whole thing was worth it at this point! That engine works so much better in the car than it ever did in the truck. After that, I buttoned up stuff some more (in roadkill fashion) and I took it to a local body shop and had them bond the front end. They had it about a month, and had to straighten the frame some to get things lined up. This poor car has been through some stuff! Since then, I've tried to fix some of the hack wiring, put in the headlights, done 2 alternators (had very bad luck with that for a while!), and got the wipers working. She drives it once or twice a week. Little 5'3" 105lb Ashley driving the 600hp non power steering, non power brake corvette. :haha: She loves the thing.

Sorry for language. Almost threw my phone out the back...

The headlights automatically deploy at 50mph. It's a safety feature! :haha:

And since the thing is kind of a jerk, we named it:

The thing is a blast to drive! That engine loves RPM's. First and second are fast, but you have to shift quick. Third is insane and has legs!!!

I bet! I had a ride in a factory 66 i think 427 4 gear vette when i was in my 20s That pulled good!
Yours would just make a guy giggle for days i'm sure! lol! Awesome!

I have to laugh watching the headlights open like they do under vacuum. My Dad's was doing the same thing until we replaced every damn vacuum line, check valve, actuator etc.

Sounds healthy :saweet:

Yeah, those opened because of wind and they're not hooked to any actuators... I'm planning on doing an electric conversion, but until then they're Mexican :haha:
