1969 C10

Slow process of putting it back together.
Ok, took the c10 out for a cruise to see if the AC cooled. Granted it's already 105 degrees out when I drove it.

Been sitting a bit took a few seconds to start. Heat may be affecting it as even after warmed up it was a tad slugging in staring. Battery is good, so not sure what's up with that at this time.

Turned the fans on Low at first started to cool pretty nicely. Kicked the fan to High and yes, it cooled pretty well. I did notice an odd sound when the fan/ac was on when I stepped on the gas. It didn't happen Everytime. Turn the AC off weird sound gone when stepping on gas. Not sure what to make of it just yet. I'll investigate further another day.

I did notice the temp gauge getting HOT. So I turned the AC off cruised around, temp went down a tad as I went home. The pic is from I turned thr AC off it was inside the solid white marker when the AC was on.

Left truck running and opened the hood in the garage, I could not duplicate the sound I heard in the cab. I did thankfully find in time, one of the transmission cooler lines was rubbing on the ac compressor belt area, so I fixed that. Just messed the steel braiding and didn't affect the actual hose. No leaking.

Anyway, as the truck temp gauge inside was reading HOT, I took my temp sensor gun all around the engine bay as it was running , and everything was fine temperature wise.

Maybe the 60 year gauge in the cluster is a bit off? Not sure just yet. Yes, it is HOT outside so that for sure is playing into I assume.

Just jotting this down for the thread.
Other than the temp being funky and that sound, along with the trans line. The AC kicked on well, and the cab was cool.

This is first time the temp got that high on the gauge, probably outside ambient temp and AC strain? Oh well.

Came home took the Blazer out and fun was had by all. Man, so much more fun to drive than the c10 I'm afraid.... oh well

It could be a poor sender. I can't remember if there is a resistor bar on the back of the temp gauge.
At least you were able to check the temperature with the gun.

You're saying that the Blazer is more fun to drive on pavement than the C10?
That isn't my experience with mine.
Not to say that I don't enjoy drinking any of my trucks, but the C10 is a blast compared to the 4x4 ones on pavement.

Yes....
There's something about the Blazer that the C10 just doesn't have. The C10 is fun to cruise but the Blazer puts a smile on face. Probably the exhaust notes in the Blazer just hit hard while the C10 is far more mellow. Which is what I wanted out of the C10 for early AM starts for work but I kind of regret that now. But it's staying as is. Hahahahah

Stand on the gas pedal harder!!!!
:saweet:

I will tell you that my C10 can get obnoxious. Interior resonance is pretty annoying around 2K rpm. And driving it on the highway gets old in about 30 minutes. But it pulls great!
I have been thinking about quieter than the 40 series..

I mean, I get a nice burnout with squealing tires stomping it into a turn and such, which I can't do in the Blazer. So it has that going for it. Hahahaha.

Took the kids for a cruise last week with them in bed and did a nice unsafe by todays standards burnout, which they all enjoyed.

Coolant was low so I topped it off but wondering if my rad cap is toast?

Also I don't have an overflow hose or bottle. Is there an aftermarket for this. I gather they weren't a stock item so...

I don't remember ever seeing a factory overflow bottle on one. I don't believe that it would be a problem to add one.
Pressure test is the best way to check the cap, but it's not usually feasible anymore.
Most will say replace it and see what happens.
If it seems to be holding pressure and the engine temperatures are good, then it's probably fine.

I just ordered a few more 13psi caps one of the red lever thing and one without from amazon and one from Napa. I bet none fit. I hadn't realized there was 9 millions different radiators caps. What an annoying thing. Such a simple thing took an hour to find what will hopefully work.

Also the radiator hold down could prove to be an issue with the "ears" of the radiator cap. I couldn't find a circular radiator cap.

Just to get an idea of Arizona garage temp. Truck has been shut off for over 5 hours and the valves covers were still hot to the touch. Hahahahah

If anyone can link a round top 13psi rad cap I'd appreciate it. I have to remove the hold down in order to get this new on. Not huge deal but...If I move the hold down over it doesn't secure the radiator properly, too much movement

The round too caps I'm finding are 15psi and up. Does 13 to 15psi matter all that much for this aluminum radiator?

Agreed. There is no way I would run a 19 psi cap on that. I would go as low as 12 though.
Welp, I bought a 13psi from Napa I could put on it.

Could the 19psi be why I was having heating issues today while driving with the AC on?

No. But your temp gun told you that it was fine, correct?

Well I've been reading a zillion posts all over and everyone has a different opinion. Some say 16psi some say 7 some say 13 some say nothing under 19 all for SBC.

Why is a radiator cap such a hot debated topic?

The radiator company replied back and said to run this

I have a stock 350 hencho in Mexico SBC with 3 row aluminum radiator with two electric fans living in Arizona. What would you run?

@6872xtc yes the reason the cap came up is because I opened mine up and the cap was looking pretty gunky. Pic posted above
