1972 Buick Skylark

Those don't appear to be fusible links, looks like normal 10ga or 12 ga wire, to me. while split loom is nice, it will cover up the fuse links and make finding a melted one harder.

Not a big deal if you know the symptoms of blown fusible link, you will know where to look.

Okay, the starter wiring shouldn't burn the car down now.

The vent for the coolant overflow was plugged with something odd. I think it was a piece of wood wrapped with electrical tape.

I don't think I posted this picture of the fuse block here, just in the PAD thread.

I was commenting on the wire under the end of the fuse when there's a free spade nearby. Someone commented that maybe they only had a male spade terminal. Nope, they didn't even have that....

It was battery feed for the newer stereo. Factory only has ignition feed.

I have a tuning question. I noticed when we blipped the throttle, we'd get smoke out the exhaust.

Does this indicate accelerator circuit too rich or lean? Or is it something that generally happens when you blip the throttle while it's idling a while?

Hmmm, so maybe the fusible links were cut out.

Back in the day when I had my 1970 Buick GS Skylark I would get high performance Buick parts from Kenne Bell. They screwed me over hard once on a camshaft for one of the 455 engines I had built for my GS, and I never did business with them again. I stuck with the major names in performance parts like Crane, Edelbrock, and the rest...they never screwed me over like Kenne Bell did.

If that's blue and it smells like oil, then its either rings or sloppy guides. It does appear bluish but I can't smell it, and its a camera.

You are barely even blipping the throttle, so I would go warm it up and drive it around before worrying about the potential oil burning. Plus, you don't want to tune accelerator pumps at idle in neutral anyway, if it isn't oil.

It doesn't have an oil smell. Smells like typical exhaust fumes.
So you're sniffing exhaust?

It's typical to see a little bit of smoke or haze when cracking the throttle.
I would drive it and see how things are, then keep an eye on the oil level. There may not be any problem other than needing to get out and run, and possibly some small adjustments needed.

I'm just a rookie exhaust sniffer, that's why I had to post here. :D

We did take it for a test drive after the distributor work. Big improvement over the points setup with the new intake. Ended up with 14° initial and 34° all in by about 2200RPM.

However the 3/4 throttle travel is a downer. Gonna have to see if I can modify the pedal somehow.

Been working on things important to teenagers, tunes!

Had to clean up previous install hacking. Luckily it's a separate piece so it's easy to work with.

I cut a piece of composite material to trim out the opening.

That bezel is only held in with 2 screws at the top. I made a "shelf" below the deck so I could screw the cage to that.

I think I might cover the screw heads on the face with some black vinyl circles.

Well the kid must be motivated about this car. Wife and I left to go decorate graves and I told him he could pull the wasted 6x9's out of the rear package tray. I didn't expect him to actually do it, but I had a text a couple hours later that he'd taken them out.

We went full tear down mode yesterday and stripped out the seats and carpet. Good to see the floors are in good shape.

20220529_122237.jpg

Thought it was cool, we found a tag on the bottom of the carpet.

20220529_121352.jpg

Not sure what this do-dad is behind the rear seat. I looks like a oblong stove pipe.

20220529_120045.jpg

Figured out why we didn't think there were rear seatbelts. They were tucked up where they couldn't be found.

20220529_115734.jpg

I had read about how to remove the rear seat bottom but the stuff I read failed to mention how the latch hooks back forward. I thought from reading we just had to push back and pull up, but you also have to pull forward after it's pulled up.

Since the carpet didn't show up on Friday like it was supposed to, we had to move on to other things. One of the problems we had was the headlight switch. I was almost falling out which made it nearly impossible to use. A little searching and I found out the problem was a broken escutcheon. Seem I'm teaching you a new word today too. :D

Instead of the nut behind the dash bezel like the squarebodies, it uses a combination of nut and bezel that goes on over the dash plastic.

Luckily I found a NOS escutcheon. I told my son, no slamming the headlights off! That little thing was expensive.

The other thing we did was finish up the gauge install. I added a tee in the port for the oil light switch so we could keep the dash light.

It was a tricky spot to reach and unfortunately it's on the front of the engine. But that's the only location I could find. I routed the line over the engine with the coolant temp wire and put them in a loom together running parallel to the wire harness on the valve cover.

The factory grommet is all ripped up, so I could run the lines thru there. Need to figure out a way to plug it up some. Something better than the RTV a previous owner attempted.

And I made a factory inspired 4 barrel sticker for the air cleaner.

Is the rear seat doo-dad hooked up to anything underneath?

They used to have some goofy space heater things back in the day. Most were under seat but that makes me wonder.
