1973 C10 "The Purple Truck"

Basic build
This is the lower kit I want to do. https://westernchassisinc.com/1973-87-Chevy-GMC-C10-Lowering-Kit-Coil-Spring-Flip-Kit/ Posting so I can find it in the future.

this has been one of my ideas as well for Sancho. I've also been looking for some mags in 15x8 or staggered 8's and 10's.
Where I have the 73 parked at the shop I see it every morning driving in first from the side and I think "I'm kinda liking the hubcaps." Then I park in front of it and I look at the front straight on and think how ridiculous the front tires look all sucked in.

I like the look of the wider rubber but you could run some spacers to correct the offset of the current wheels too.

that's an affordable option.

Be sure to either get shocks that are shorter or use the correction pieces available there.

Took about 2 months to destroy some brand new shocks on the first S-10 that I lowered via springs because I was too cheap to pony up for the right shocks...

Good thing is I will need to replace shocks anyway.

I don't know, now I'm kinda thinking about just lowering the rear 2" to level out the truck. I'm thinking practical here and being able to get under the truck.

Also wanted to paste this link for future reference. http://squarebodysyndicate.com/sbs-formula.html

I have thought about that too.

Working on a lovely exhaust system today, pictures to come, but first anyone know the purpose of this?

That's the exhaust gasket on this short piece of reducing pipe. Seems to just serve to reduce exhaust diameter and hold the gasket. It's on both sides.

Yep. My old mitsu turbo had steps cast into the manifold and turbo. Short piece of pipe sat in there and kept the gasket from seeing the majority of exhaust flow....

We knew when we bought this truck the driver exhaust manifold was cracked. This weekend I replaced that and "upgraded" the exhaust.

After I removed the back 2 bolts, this piece just fell out of the engine bay.

2018-11-03 09.54.56.jpg

The valve cover leaks as you can see with the oil on the broken piece.

2018-11-03 09.53.31.jpg

Then, this piece came out with the y-pipe.

2018-11-03 10.46.01.jpg

So this 350 had the extremely rare 3 piece exhaust manifold.

2018-11-03 10.55.54.jpg

This was the first time I ever saw these things that I asked about above.

The interesting thing is the nicer looking one on the right came out of the busted manifold. So it seems like someone maybe replaced the "donut" gasket. It had to have been before the broken manifold because the one piece would have just fallen out. Maybe they broke the manifold putting the y-pipe back on? I just wonder how the manifold got so busted up. The exhaust is all old and shows no signs of being smashed.

Speaking of the exhaust system, here's the high performance setup that was in there.

Yes, it was y-pipe into single exhaust. Not a big deal except that it has maybe 2.5" up to the muffler and then kinked bend 2.25" tail pipe. Here are the other gems I found with the exhaust system.

Note the odd use of square nuts above.

Good old soup can & bailing wire muffler patch. Some other random material added for good measure.

2018-11-03 10.35.25.jpg

Cheap flex pipe mounted right over old rusty tail pipe with a cool tip added for effect.

It does have a typical rear main leak so I thought this shield on the y-pipe was funny and yet also at least a little clever.

New manifold from China.

I noticed when I did the removal the front manifold bolt was loose. Problem was it was just a bit too short to reach the threads with the power steering pump bracket. I had to scrounge up a bolt; only thing I found long enough was a left over ARP bolt.

For the new exhaust I cut the 2.5" single pipe off the y-pipe and added a short piece of 3".

Then it's single 3" out through a Magnaflow. This will be the third truck for this muffler. It was in the K5, then the crew cab with the TBI350, and now this 73.

You can see my custom Frankenstein exhaust made up of pieces welded together. I used most of a 5' straight and half of a mandrel U-bend that was left over from Nate's red K5 exhaust project.

You can barely see my bit of cheating "hack" work to make it line up where I wanted. There's a spot near the left side of the photo where I put a pie slice in the straight run before the hanger. Before I did that, the hanger was hitting the frame and the muffler was hitting the e-brake brackets. I took about a 1/2" wedge out and bent the pipe a little. Then used the wedge to weld the pipe back together.

It worked out perfect and the tailpipe even hit the hanger just like I knew what I was doing. I didn't get a picture of the tailpipe because I need to get a different hanger type. The exhaust ends with a turn down just in front of the rear axle.

I was thinking about replacing the Magnaflow with the Thrush welded muffler that comes highly recommended by @Bent77 but the MF was free. I still might get the Thrush if I can verify the offsets will line up with where the Magnaflow sits.

Well, @Bent77 is on point with the Thrush welded mufflers. I have those on my blazer right now. And so far I'm on my third muffler on the 8.1 in my crew cab. Started out with the 50 series Flowmaster...was too poppy at higher RPM's for me. Then went with a larger Magnaflow muffler, and it was just too quiet for me (made it seem like there wasn't a 496 under the hood ), then just this weekend I picked up a Thrush welded muffler. It just has a turndown right after the muffler just before the rear axle...and boy ol boy, it is the sweet spot now. It has a nice low tone to it at idle, and sounds real good off idle, and even higher RPMs is loud enough for people to look and say, "What the freak is under the hood of that boat!?!" but not loud enough that I can't just cruise down the road without being able to hear my wife next to me.

So I'll second @Bent77 and say Thrush is the way to go. I'll probably put it on all my vehicles now

I'll third the notion on Thrush Welded. Got a pair on my K5. Good aggressive tone but not obnoxious. No drone at speed and you can have a conversation and not need to yell to the passenger. You know they are there when you hammer the go-pedal though.

The Magnaflow is center in offset out. Has anyone every noticed if the offsets are the same from muffler to muffler, or are they usually different.

When I search for them they have a lots of different options. The thrush I just put on the crew cab is offset inlet and center outlet. But some I found had center in/center out, or offset in/offset out. I think it just depends on the muffler you are looking for and also the tube size you need too. You should be able to pick and choose

I meant how much offset there is between the inlet and outlet. The distance between the center of each in other words.

Oh...well don't I feel sheepish....:sign7:

I think it still will depend on the muffler you choose. The Magaflow that I put on the crew cab earlier was much larger in total dimensions then the 50 series or the thrush I put on there. Therefore the distance between center outlet to offset inlet is a bit different from muffler to muffler. Not a crazy amount of difference, but some.

Ill look here soon

Any you hosers have a alum intake for Scott?

He didn't say that he was looking, did he?

I have one for a small block, that has a throttle body bolted to it.
Edelbrock performer.

Does yours have the EGR? I want to get rid of it - part of the reason I was asking about emissions testing in the regional forum.
