1973 C10 "The Purple Truck"

Basic build
I'm pretty sure right now the rear brakes are the primary stopping force. I'd been planning to start working on the front brakes until I started having the engine issues. Hopefully now I can get back to them.
 
Picked up a "batwing" air cleaner. I still need something enclosed to muffle the intake noise. I may do something with a snorkel setup in the future, but this will do for now. Had to add some stickers to dress it up a little.

What benefits does that type of air cleaner provide other than looking nice.
No benefit. It's meant to copy the look of 50's oldsmobile and cadillac air cleaners. Technically this one is scaled down to 7/8 of the original size.

I debated about just a stock air cleaner but I like the looks of this one a little better.

I'm all on board for fresh air to the engine, but I can't imagine having intake noise bad enough to want it quieter.
Is is whistling sometimes?
Or are the mufflers too quiet?

It's just a little too obnoxious. Yes there's a whistle at 25-35% throttle. Even just the IAC when the engine is cold is annoying. I don't think the exhaust is too quiet, but with the tailpipes moved back behind the rear tires it's quieter in the cab.

I doubt my little engine is really going to see a worthwhile swing in horsepower due to inlet air temperature. :p:

I have always thought those were cool.
Just an FYI to anyone who might want to run an original one of these. {there is usually at least one at most swap meets}
The reason they are scaled down is because original ones will not clear an HEI dist unless they are spaced up a huge amount.
 
Well I got a couple months of smooth running. On the drive home last night the engine started running rough. This is different from the vacuum leak as it's there all the time. AFR and fuel pressure are both fine. I'm thinking I either have fouled plug(s) or an injector issue because it's similar to how the engine would run if 2 plug wires were swapped.

My first thought was I had a plug wire burnt on the headers. I did a quick check of the plug wires in the dark 15°F night, and there's not any obvious signs of a burnt wire. I'll take a closer look when I can spend a little more time looking things over more closely. If I don't see any wire issues, I'll start pulling spark plugs.

Any other recommendations?
 
I found it. I was in the place hardest to see hidden behind/under the compressor. Had to climb up on the core support to see it. The plug boot needed to be rotated about 1/8 turn to get the wire away from the tube.

Was the truck running when you looked at it in the dark? You would see the bad wires arcing.
It wasn't but that might have clued my in.

Why not run the little heat sleeve boots? I have them on my blazer because of the headers. The downside is that they have a little metal ring in them and if you have 90degree angled plug wires it's impossible to get them around that angle. So I had to cut the ring out which makes them a bit unsightly as they are frayed on one side
