1973 C10 "The Purple Truck"

Basic build
It amazes me how people can drive on rotors like that.
I've seen it at the shop. When asked how long the brakes we grinding we always get told " oh it just started making noise yesterday." Sure it did....

Sweetk30's looks like it rusted through the vanes...
yep and the pedal went to the floor as i coasted to a light turning red ahead as i dont jam my brakes hard like some drivers i read the road and act before its to late . it was ME driving the truck and was a chevy c5500 rollback . just had the normal brake rotor warp fell of a heavy truck until pop . i vise-gripped off the hose and duct taped them to the hose just incase and drove it almost 40 miles back to the shop with a car on the bed . had better brakes than before this popped . :pimp: and just incase my driveline parking brake worked real good if i needed extra .

I have done similar things with other bigger vehicles to get somewhere I can buy parts and fix it instead of paying road service.

worst case the boss would have picked me up with the 30ton wrecker . i told him i got this no need just letting you know i will be a bit longer is all .

Yeah I have dealt with bad brake chambers, leaking line, blown airbags ... and once blew 2 tires side by side and drove 99 miles

How would you all attack this? I'm not setup yet to weld in patch panels. My inclination would be to sand it down and paint over it. It will get covered with a white vinyl stripe to match the door. I'm a little afraid once I start sanding there won't be anything left.

that = patch panel sorry to say its blown out rust not surface rust .

and get some brake parts cleaner on a rag and wipe off that long white chalk mark on the sidewall of the tire .

That's what I was afraid of. I think the PO painted over it because it wasn't like that when we bought it.

It's the front fender. That would be an interesting look, tho. Haha
Front fender, easy replace it

Where the heck can I find patch panels for that? So far I only find the bottom rear section or entire fenders. Unfortunately I don't think I could ever match a paint to this metallic purple gray if I was to replace the entire fender.

I like the chalk line

It needs a fender. If you pull that one off let me know. I can harvest it for the trailing side lip

Then just stop the rust and keep it like that.
I've decided that's what I'm going to do knowing that the fender will need replaced in the future. If I can get a few more years out of it, then I will be in a place to replace the fender and just repaint the whole truck.

I also think I will add the wheel well trim pieces. The old paint shows thru the new paint along the inside edges anyway and every time I wash the truck a little more purple comes off. The trim will cover the inside lip and also a little of the outer part where the rust is coming in.

Now that @sweetk30 pointed it out, I have to leave it for as long as it lasts. :haha: Gotta be stubborn.... I will let you know if/when I remove the fender down the road.

I really like the new tires. Still have good acceleration from a stop which I was afraid I might lose with the larger tires.

73-79

If you find some, I can haul them back for him
