When I was a kid, a neighbor had an old J-truck (not so old at the time) that was painted red and had yellow and orange stripes on it. It also said "Comanche" real big on the sides of it. It must have been some sort of trim package. IIRC, it also had slotted mags, a 'roll bar' and it might have had double tube bumpers too.

This is what I was thinking, an option package, like the Honcho, Golden Eagle and such.

That could be too. I have been told, a lot of the old dealers did the trim package in house. So they basically got new trucks in and turned them into whatever trim package. Dealer option I guess you could say.
Jeep has had a lot of "Edition's" too.
