1973 K10 : Chloe

1973 K10 offroad build
Dude that looks awful familiar to my 8.1 that took a dump in my driveway. Happen to notice if there was any fuel in the pan? Or for that matter in the intake when you took it off?

I don’t remember back that far, it was a couple of years ago when I had those parts in the open.
I bought it as a basket case from one of the “SLC Syndicate” the 801 branch of CK5.
As I remember, he bought it as a basket case also, from someone else, I don’t remember who.

It sucks either way. Dang. I know with all my time around 8.1’s with workhorse, Larry and my own when mine kicked a rod out we were all scratching our heads. It ran fine in Moab at BB until I killed the 241. Drove it on and off the trailer and into multiple spots at my dad’s house before it sat for a few months. Never any sign of an issue.

Went to move it again after my dad passed and checked the oil and other things before lighting it off. That’s when I noticed the pan was full of fuel. Drained it and filled with fresh oil and fired it up. I’d swear it sounded damn near identical to yours before it stopped. Fuel came from a ruptured diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator. The vacuum line fed the fuel directly to cylinders 3&5 causing the rods to bend when it kicked over with fuel in the holes. Months later once it got to Larry’s house there was still fuel in the intake and sitting on top of the closed intake valves for 3 and 5.

All my years I’ve never seen one do that. My time at workhorse I saw failures but most were caused by one or two things. Running them out of coolant or running out of oil. Seems like rv people are fricking clueless when it comes to checking fluid levels because it was not uncommon.

A 100k mile unit is still low mileage on an 8.1. I’d give it a solid once over, check a couple of bearings to be sure, seal it up and stuff it back in. Though if you do have a return style fuel system pick up a fresh regulator for it. Just cheap insurance.

Since I have to wait until mid next week for the local salvage yard to get my bought and paid for 100K mile engine out of the wrecked truck that it’s in.
I may as well do something to keep my AADD riddled brain from going off the rails. So, here I am rebuilding the Dana 60F, MMMMMmmmmm 5.38spooled goodness

A front spool? Not gonna drive on street ?
As long as the hubs are unlocked you’d never know. I had a minispool in my 10 bolt at blazerbash a few years ago. But yeah, full hydro steering will help. I drove most of hells with one hub unlocked so it was easier to steer on the sandstone.

I should buy a lottery ticket!
First time, it fought me for a minute. I used two 4.5 inch long bolts to hold the bottom holes in the caps as guides, then just beat it in with my dead-blow soft mallet.
I’m a smilin’ MuthaFawker! Finally some good news!
New seals, new bearings and races.
Now, for the accessories on the front axle.
0.007” backlash? and, a new 1410 yoke to finisher off. I’ll take it!
And DIY4X armor! WIN!
