1973 K5 - My any purpose... any road build. (NEW PICS UPDATE 6-6-13 POST#92)

I really appreciate your honesty, as most people wont say 'stock is fine'

For the most part I agree. The truth is I am fine with it for everyday wheeling and driving, but my eventual plans require a truck that is absolutely bullet proof among other things.

Don't get me wrong I love this truck as is, and there is no way I'm going to rip it appart and turn it into a hardcore crawler, but I will build a truck that can traverse any passable road in any weather and look good while doing it. I want something I can enjoy and not worry about at the same time.

Like I said though this will not turn into a fenderless doorless crawler that can go over 8 foot rocks at an 80 degree angle with ease. (As much as I would love one cause they are soo cool... just not this truck :D )

It has been raining a lot this week (10 inches today) and Friday will be my first chance to off road the truck. I want to see what I do and don't like then go from there.

I'll report back then.

I had 10in of rain in my front racing bucket it was not awsome took the top off Sunday night when people where over almost drove it into work on Monday that would of be a crappy ride home Tuesday morning.

Do you have any pics of your interior?
Where you going on friday.

We are going to my friends land out by Azle. Its about 50 acres of mixed terrain that is good for sotckish trucks, he has a stock Bronco.

Heres the report

Just got back from my first wheelin and I'm pretty bummed.

The truck did not stay in 4 wheel at all. I got stuck a lot and had to be pulled out by my buddy which was totally embarrasing cause he drives a stock Bronco.

Does ORD's twin stick for the NP203 help with that?

The front would engage (I think) but when I would start to move the front tires wouldnt turn and the stick would feel like it poped back out.

Also, I will for sure need to get a bar/cage at some point. The flex was way worse than I thought without the top on.

And I will also be moving to 35s which wont fit the truck like it is. I'm going to get new/used fenders to massage so I can save these.

Here are some pictures

I was however quite pleased with the travel/flex I got with the current set up.

That solidifies my suspention height as a keeper.

I may take you up on that.

AND I may have found a fender doner freebie as there is a '75 long bed just sitting out at that property. WOOT :woot:

she looks like she works just fine man. i ran 2.5" lift trimmed with 35's and most people were surprised at how well my "little K5" did on the trail. easy by slowly fix the little issues. you sure got a beauty truck there....

Sounds like your 203 shifter linkage just needs to be cleaned or adjusted. Never done it, but there's a few threads in here on how to if you want to try.

Or, some people just give it a good kick to get it in 4lo.

Correct.

It was converted two owners ago.

I need to try adjusting it first.

Hopefully, adjusting the linkage works. ORD sell the twin stick because the factory shifter mechanism wears out and won't keep 4wd (or 4loc) engaged.
I tried to adjust my linkage but it didn't work because the shifter was junk.
My fix was to swap a NP205 that I already had.

I've got a 203 shifter laying here doing nothing if you want it. Worked fine before I replaced mine with a 205. You could replace yours or build your own twinstick.

Hmmm. Tempting. That would be cool.

The truck has an aftermarket shifter on it (Hurst). I want to try to adjust it some time this week and go from there.

That is a factory shifter. Hurst made and supplied those to GM for the NP203's.

i hate to say since i wheel my DD but a k5 in that good of condition back here would defintly be stayin on the road haha

i love that body style and full convertable blazers, makes me jealous lol

Thats what I was going to say. beat me to it. BTW if it was mine I wouldn`t wheel that truck to hard, its just to nice! Just my opinion.

I was unaware they made the facory shifters... cool. I'll have to get a picture of mine. It's a solid billet Hurst.

As far as the truck being too nice to wheel, I sometimes feel the same way. But like I mentioned earlier I don't plan on making this thing a hard core rock crawler, there arent even that many rocks around my area so that would be real dumb.

Think of a truck that looks just like mine but with an idiot proof drive train.

Also,

I messed around with the shifter last night.

Holy crap was the linkage crusty. There must have been 37 years of grease and dirt on it and in the housing. I'm going to clean it up and try again because I think that was my problem.

I had a prob with my last 203 and the 2wd conversion. The shifter was WAY out of adjustment and when i would shift into 4hi it would just pop back out and give me the finger... after an adjustment and some grease it worked like a champ.
