1974 Jimmy

Like you I didnt like the pattern.

Moved the pinion out. Seems to be better. Now my backlash is 10-11 thousandths. I’ll need to fix that.

Thoughts?

On to installing the spindles back into the axle tubes.

I’m stumped on something. I’ve got an outside tube dust seal that seems to be incorrect from an “as manufactured” standpoint.

The left side is a slightly different design than the right. The interweb search says that GM Dana 44 axle tubes were open to allow water to drain and I assume my uncle added these as preventative maintenance.

They fit perfect though so not sure if they are factory.

Other than a few missing bolts the front end is about finished. I need to get the steering link bar (I'm sure that isn't the official name) installed and the front wheels aligned.

Also, I don't care what anyone says, the motor mount poly inserts do not fit these clamshells. Anyone has advice on original fitting poly inserts. All I can find are these way too wide and thick monstrosities.

Here is what LMC sends...

I believe you need to separate the clam to install those poly mounts. I have never used so I may be wrong.
The steering link bar, is called a Drag link by most.
Looks like a brand new chassis, looking good.

I separated the clam shell. This polly mount is a tight fit width wise and it stands about 1/8" too proud so the backing plate wont compress down on the outer shell. All the videos that demonstrate the process must have similar but larger design clam shell because the mount has no room to move once jammed into the clam part of the shell.

I am going to pick up the 2292 style shells from auto zone on my way home. Those inserts seems to be the correct style.

I'll post a pic of what the issue is when I get home.

Let's talk rims for a second. I think I'm going to reuse the rims I have. But, I am going to derust them and I would like to paint them white. Anyone have any experience with formally "chrome" rims that have turned 63.4% rust? I'm assuming I can basically sand them down really good, degrease, prime, paint and then clear coat them. Any issues with that plan?

Here are a few pictures of the truck...sorry, I don't know how to resize images. They were all taken with an iPhone and they seem big.

To remove chrome the best is sand blasting.
Otherwise yes the rest is good process

I’ve started focusing on the body. I need to build a proper cart to hold the body and keep it level.

But, I’ve started dissecting.

I’ve decided I need to remove the entire cowl/windshield apparatus.
I think I am going to have to do this on my '85 (not full vert) to get every spec of some A-pillar rust so it never comes back. Unfortunately I have no advice yet, as I'm neck deep in fixing my bed floor currently. Drilling out all the spot welds is going to suck a lot.

Not sure how much of this will apply to a full vert, but I have been keeping an eye on this thread, where he has been doing some A-pillar and roof work. He has some pictures of parts of the pillars and roof cut into. Maybe that will help in your case, maybe not.

Good luck, I will be following along! Or if I get to mine first then you can watch me to find out how not to do it LOL.

Use an inspection camera and make sure that's necessary. You can remove that whole piece and AMD does make a replacement, but you'll have to modify it since you have a full vert. If it's only bad on the fire wall in a spot or two I would patch it. That 20ga metal on there can be manipulated easily. There is a fitzee video below that you may find helpful. You'll be into quite the can of worms if you take the full piece off, not saying can't do it, I just hate to see create extra work for yourself. I just finished up my cowl and have an extra 73-80 driver's side cowl panel if you think you'll need it btw.
