On my trucks I moved the the red wire that goes under the positive battery cable at the solenoid (some years had two red wires with fusible links there)--and I routed them up and back to the battery positive right at the battery--I eliminated that metal conduit pipe the wires ran through because I've had the wires roast in that tube on more than one truck, and it makes replacing the fusible links a real pain..having them up along the inner fender makes it easy to inspect and repair the wires and fuse links if need be..and now at the solenoid, all you'll have is the positive battery cable, and the purple "crank" wire going to the "S" terminal on the solenoid...
I had to add a little 10 gauge "extention" to get the red wires to reach the battery, and connected them right to the positive terminal--all the pre-72 trucks were wired that way and it was a better arrangement IMO..
On the alternator in addition to the red wire that goes to the stud on the rear of it,the other two wires on the plug are usually one red one that goes to the #1 terminal on the alternator and stays hot constantly, the other is either tan, light brown or white, that one gets 12V only with the key "on" or "run" to energize the field coils so it'll charge..
