1978 K20 farm truck "Boring maintenance phase"

1978 K20- Rusty beater farm truck
Sbc400... Yes yes. I am thinking about hitting up red power Roundup in Des Moines.... I think in two weeks....

Maybe I'll steal the 6.5 td turbo off an old farm truck on the way home and build a cheapy turbo small block...

If you hit up Red power roundup get ahold of me! I'm going to put in for vacation on Friday so I can wander around There all day

EDIT- it's next weekend already, 15-17th

What's the rear gear ratio in that 6.5 trucks rear end? And it has an NV4500 in it that I hear you don't like them much anymore. I'm sure we can work something for what's left after you sell Brian the engine ;)

It's a 4.10 14BFF. Yep, the NV4500 is still there. It even has a shifter now. :haha: :rotfl: :pimp:

Ok, will do. I want to take my dad for father's day. I will see him tomorrow to see if we can make it work.
I am thinking Saturday.

@GWeakland620

Want to buy a boat? Campy already has got the anchor...

I have several anchors handy!

But my boats are much, much bigger than anything you'll ever see in Des Moines. :deal:

Come to think of it, I MightAsWell sell off my other 6.5 turbine set, too. Twin turbines FTW! :saweet:

The fairgrounds is only 30 ish miles from me so it wouldn't be a big deal either way for me!

But Brian taking the engine seriously devalues the truck. Not much left after the Detroit Diesel goodness is removed. ;)

It does devalue it a lot, so much that you just want to trade it for some seats. You know it to be true ;):haha:

When I'm done pulling out everything of value, that sort of horse trading becomes a distinct possibility. But those had better be some pretty fancy seats...

I put those same seats in my 79. They are nice. I would put them in the 76 but they won't fit the theme I am building that truck to.

As far as this farm truck goes. I think you should keep with the 70s look inside
No cheesey suburban wood dash, or seats etc etc.

I didn't really like the idea of drilling and tapping the face of the NV4500 much. It worked fine for you but my preferred method is installing the bellhousing first the stab the trans in after. I could've just used the current 465's bell if I had went the way you did.

When I went through that adaptation, and felt too cheap for an AA bell, I believe it was Martin who said "I can drill a lot of holes for $400." :haha:

You're right. Cheesy 80s Suburban stuff should go into a cheesy 80s Suburban. I'll give you $5 CASH for the whole interior.

In today's society we pay alot for convenience. There are several things I have done on my different builds over the years that a little extra money went for miles of extra convenience. Does that make you less of a guy guy? Lose your man card? I don't think so.

Nope, money/time is always a trade-off. But paying $400 to save 10 minutes of drilling sure didn't reflect the value of my time. YMMV, as James' clearly does.

10 minutes of drilling?

What happens if Mr. Murphy stops by to break your bit/tap? Or mis-locate a hole?

Maybe he doesn't know how you get to your house, but he stops by daily at mine...
:haha:

He did. Though he got lost in the woods along the way (it's how he rolls). I wound up drilling each hole twice due to mis-sizing the holes the first time.

So...20 minutes of work, since I had to do it twice. Still a no-brainer

I am still going to play devil's advocate with you...
That's a no brainer, but that's not a mis-located hole, that's undersize. A mis location would be weld up the hole and re drill... Now through work harded steel. Which is tougher...
Now what happens is you can't weld or don't have a welder at your ready? Or even accessable at all?
Then a trip to the machine shop is going to cost you.
Plus the time to get it there, fix it, and pick it up. Plus the bill.

Now that convince fee of 400 bucks isn't looking so bad....

Don't get me wrong. I probably would drill the holes myself. But then again I've never had a problem with a 465. So the likely hood of me ever doing this swap is pretty much a 0% chance.

No, that's just the point where I give up and spend the $400. Nothing lost but the time.
