1980 gmc.. build thread.. im back.. post 438. :/

looks good only thing id suggest is cuttin and angle up to the corners so it isnt so block like.
the reason its not cuted all the way up is because i dont want to run mudflaps. and inspection reason. but its only for like another year or 2 before the truck will be 100 percent off road

its to late but I would have suggested that you take the bumper off and do the welding flat. also turn the heat up and slow your hand down.

my heat was all the way up and i went slow, its alot better than the first time 3 days ago. new wires, new tip. was at .030 went up to .040. and im taking them off probably today if it clears up. rain rain go away, then im grinding it smooth and see how it looks, weld the back side of it so its strong. but hey its my first time and it doesnt look too bad except for the first time welding 3 days ago.

yours has been slow? aleast it's still moving, unlike roadkill. lol

Here are the slider pics you asked for! Sorry for puttin' em' here, but couldn't figgure a way to attach to a P.M.:doah: First is where the rear of the slider attaches to the frame (the rubber mount is the handle isolator from a Multiquip upright compactor {I collect junk}) it bolted right into the two frame holes above the forward rear spring hangerView attachment 58147
notice the design flaw - when the front tire is flexed up the slider and lower edge of the bed compete for space:doah:
View attachment 58148
slider welded to the cab (is also welded to the pinch weld un the bottom edge of the rocker) - no doubt the hardest part of the job
View attachment 58149
front of cab/ back of front fender
View attachment 58150
nothing fancy - just 2x3 angle iron
View attachment 58151 something I didn't get a pic of is the nice 1/8" thick factory skid plates on my fuel tanks - without those I may have built my sliders lower to protect the tanks Hope all of this helps!!! Travis

travis, mtnman. thats alright u can post it up. it gives me idea of how to build mine. sure looks like a pain since the cab and the box isnt together and i see how ur box is bent up from the slider. happened when u flexed it? i might build just the cab selection only. it defentily gave me ideas, thanks for ur time man! the only reason i want sliders is cause my rockers are rottened away.. so time to upgrade it thru the winter.

My rockers were good AZ rockers - thats why I used angle iron. If yours are rotted then you could cut them out and use 2x3 rectangular tube. Yes, most of the damage on the bottom of the bed is from major flex causing the sliders to push up into the bed - the bed is going away when I do my crew cab swap so it wasn't a huge issue to me

back to work on it, april 17, 08

about time to get back to work on the truck. it sat all winter, the rear tire went flat on drivers side, turns out to be a cracked rim, oh well. i took the rim off, thinkin the spare is good. turns out the spare is flat and full of water, and the tire is off the rim:doah: now its sittin on jackstand, and jack holdin it up til i put stock rim n tire on for now, im supposed to pick up a lender rim soon so i can use it for now, other than that truck fired right up and runs great! i keep sitting in the truck, wishin i cld drive it now, so i think in a couple of weeks im gonna put it on the road. and drive it, work on it a little at a time, and i guess im keepin the box on.

add a pic, taken with a cell phone. this is how she sits now.

thats a shame, those are nice wheels. i like the looks of your k20 and the old skool paint job. are you running a rear bumper?
yeah i like those rims, am keeping 3 and see if can find used 4th. rim. the old school paint job is nice! but its not saveable, so ill have it olive green soon. (i think) the rear bumper, yes im running it. its not on, its on post number 299 if u look back, u will see it. it still needs more work. i stopped workin on the truck for like 5 or 6 months. :o

yeah i just read through your whole post and seen the rear bumper. i like the boxiness of it but im wondering what you started out with the make it (main piece of steel). i guess i'll have to save the pics and see if my boss or i can duplicate the 4 by 4 and stripes maybe later on down the road on my k10

Does this mean I need to dig up my build thread when I pick up the 60? I think you should repaint her like she was, retro. Hell if you keep the retro paint, I'll give you those rims.

:thinking::thinking::thinking: more than one people like this retro look, maybe i should start a vote to see how many people vote for this look...

I like the retro paint too, Rich. But in the end...paint it the way YOU want to paint it.
i like the retro look too, i just have to figure out how to do it, cause it will be done by rattle can, the orange part on my truck is from a sticker. and it will peel off fast in the woods, the rattle can is easy to touch up.

oh and trevor, (skyyk5) i guess u will have to dig up ur build thread:haha: i did cause i want all of the info in one thread. instead of everywhere. ill start a vote poll tonight for the retro look.
