1981 K20

6" lift. 3/4 ton axles.
Dude, you totally misdiagnosed your problem. You had a garage problem. Not a old truck problem.
You just needed a bigger garage dude!

Oh well. RIP 1981 k20.
You’re correct. If I had any family with land or barn I would’ve just squirreled it away for awhile but oh well. What can you do.

Nice jewelry box, whats the technique on the corner for the dove. Its extra deep on the side.
So I use box joint to connect the maple to the walnut/cherry (depending on the box ). I used a longer piece of maple on opposing corners to give a visual interest and to also help grow the width of the box interior using the material I had on hand.

after that I did just a mitered corner and added splines to reinforce the miters and put the razzle in the dazzle.

I have the porter cable one. Its ok for basic dovetails.
Not worth having one the more expensive ones unless you do it all the time.

If making boxes is your main jam then yes its worth it to get a more expensive one.

I like adding the spline detail like you did there.

I was gonna try to do it by hand with saw and chisel. I’d be doing it purely for fun and the challenge. I don’t see myself doing them on purpose for a project where I’d be doing enough to need to use a router.

Yeah, I believe anyone can do wood working with some good tools. Doing things by hand is much more of an art.
Get some good chisels. I have a Stanley sweetheart set.
They are a good value for a beginner woodworker, or a guy like me that bounces around hobbies.
They have served me well enough I don't think I need anything more, but are still a nice set.

Here is the last box I built.

Man I love that figured wood. The box I made my wife had some sweet figured maple with birds eye that really popped.

I’ve got a bunch of heavy figures walnut up in the rack I’ve been saving for something or other I haven’t figured out yet.

Yeah the whole walnut tree i cut down is like that.
A fellow woodworker said I was sitting on a goldmine.

I simply told him, me and pa, didn't cut that tree down off pa's land to sell. Lol
:dunno:

I’m also of the opinion that I like having a little sapwood in there. Really makes the color differences jump out. I’m sure for a table or big piece of furniture, you’d want the colors to blend, but I love having the variance to show up.

No, your not alone. I like the sap wood to.
The classic traditional guy doesn't. But there are no rules. So do what you like.

The walnut is really cool with sapwood due to the drastic color change.

I want to try using a dark grain filler on one my next walnut projects. I saw a video of it to make the grain and figure really explode off the board.

I just skipped to the finishing part.

Yes, I have used that Danish oil on walnut.
Its does exactly what he said. Its darkens it up and make it look nice. 100% recommend.
Also a fan on tung oil. I buy it off Amazon, 30 bucks for a gallon, you won't find it cheaper.

For whats its worth those watco products are generally my go to.

I currently have both of those finishes in the garage.
I used tung oil on the box because I didn’t want the danish oil to mess up the maple. But on all walnut I did you use the watco danish. Was pleased.
