Grab a HVLP gun. Don't waste your money with one thats marketed for wood workers. Get a real man's one for auto.
If you get into spraying clears they are the way to go.
I put a auto clearcoat on my stepside boards with my hvlp.
Point being, my one woodwork friend doesn't know how to step out side the box. If they don't sell it at rockler then it can't be done type of mindset... you will be fine due to your auto knowledge.
