yeah, the block doesn't have dowel pins for the front or rear covers to align them up properly. If you tighten them down and they're offset a bit, you can potentially have a leaking front or rear main seal. The tool kit comes with a bunch of other things (balancer puller, valve seal installer, oil pan alignment, etc, etc), but you can get by without a lot of them.

Google "Kent Moore LS engine tool kit" and you'll get a picture of what it comes with.

I completely tear down and rebuild front axle, 4 replies.

Ben talks about doing work, 5 pages of replies :haha:

Glad you guys got a game plan. Excited to see this thing running.

Yep. Adam, I think Ben is right. If you post up a ton of progress over the course of 2 days, it's business as usual. We expect that from you now a days! But Ben talking about doing work is quite unusual in recent months.

Not to mention this isn't nearly the first time your thread has featured you tearing apart an axle. For you it's just another part of your winter-time tuneup...

Ive ripped that damn axle down like 10 times now :doah:

Only because of breakage 2 times.

So...you tear it down just for the fun of it? :screwy:

:haha:

Dont buy parts that involve taking axle down one at a time.

Buy them all and do it one time :haha:

I guarantee, give me the 5 tools or so it takes, and I could tear the whole thing down and put back together blindfolded lol.

What do you guys think about a oil cooler? I have the factory ls style line but would need cut and most likely have a fitting brazed onto it. Also been thinking about a aux trans filter. A clean trans is a happy trans.

Tranny filter that I made and mounted up on the cross member.

Here is the one I made. Had it machined for the seal on the allison spin on filter. Also had to have the fitting made so it had the thread pattern for the filter.

Something like that would work really good, but I don't necessarily need it to start and run yet.

i really wish i had put on an external trans filter while i could.... i've got my engine in, and with my engine in, there's no way for me to bolt the external transmission filter to the engine angle plates. you can't mount them to the frame anywhere because the frame is C-shaped, and the transmission filter won't clear inside the frame lip.

Just seems weird to me to worry about. I know a clean trans is a happy trans, but there are probably hundreds of thousands of vehicles on the road with 200k+ miles on the original trans while using the stock trans filter. I have never even considered an external trans filter. The th400 in the burb has 229k miles on it and just has the stock internal filter. Not that its a bad idea, it just doesnt seem worth worrying about. I think far more important, is a trans cooler.

The trans filter would be in line with the trans cooler so it's just a little more cutting and splicing.

If you want to do an oil cooler for the engine Nice but not needed, the easiest way is an aftermarket pan, use a remote oil Filter and cooler. Tilden Motorsports makes a nice pan or Kevko makes a decent pan but the looks are a bit off.

I wouldn't worry one bit about a remote oil filter for the trans, the internal filter works fine, a cool trans is a happy trans spend the $$ on a good cooler.
