I actually got a days worth of work in today, nothing worth posting just getting the odds and ends in for test fitting the engine which will be happening this weekend.


Does anyone have an thoughts on how to compress the front suspension for shackle angle? I have no weight on the front besides the frame. I tried using my floor jack but it wasn't nearly enough.
 
High lift jack with the top job turned for compression. Hook it on the frame and axle. Wrap a chain around each end to keep it from coming off. Then jack.
 
I was hoping you would chime in Wade, I was really looking forward to your input on the front end setup. For shackle angle, this is what Stephen from ORD suggested.

I'd aim for something along the lines of 30 degrees or a little less and run with it. Also, it might be easier for you to figure a triangle with one leg being 52", one leg being 4" (or your shackle length) with the shackle to spring line at 60 degrees. Then find your other leg length which in this case is 50 1/8". This is the measurement from your main eye to the eye of your shackle hanger. Maybe this is the method you were using already?

All my referenced angle measurements are between the eye to eye CL on the leaf spring when it's flat (as long as possible) and the eye to eye line on the shackle.
And my numbers were assuming a stock rear spring on the rear where you're working on the front. You may be lucky in that a 10 degree angle when the front spring is at free arch may only translate to 20-30 degrees when it's flat and will stilll work out pretty well. Not as good in compression as a shallower angle but it should be OK.
What is your thoughts on this? I want to be able to get the full travel out of the springs and have the shock setup for maximum usage which I think would be vertical but laid in towards the engine.
 
I'm not the one to ask on leaf springs. My solution to them is, cut them off. What ORD gave you is right. If you can compress it to full bump, clearing the frame is the key.
 
If I could weld, it would be linked in the front. I have no doubts they are right, not sure what I was asking for. :dunno: I already started on that project, just hit a bump.

My thoughts are to run the shock vertical laid inward to the engine with a Hydraulic Bump Stop if I can afford it.


Funds are getting low on the project, I pretty much have everything to get it driving. It's amazing how fast 5 years of saving goes. Tax season is right around the corner so who knows.
 
Ok guys, now it's time to mount the shackle the correct way this time. I have been doing math for the passed hour and I think I got it spot on now.


This is my idea.


First I measure the spring along the arch and got 49 inches ( completely flat in theory)

With those measurements I come to a calculator and input my angle and the desired angle which is 30 that Stephen at ORD designed my springs at.

With my understanding I should put the center of the shackle bushing at 43 inches and 7/8's

Now the real kicker is this... This is the factory measurement on a 1ton 4wd.

Mine will be 43 inches ad 7/8 vs 46 and 3/4 with a difference of 3 and 1/8th inches from the factory. Will it hit the frame? :dunno:


This is a leaf spring suspension not linked. :doah: I can't imagion the math involved with that.
 
Nonononononono. Even I can see that is wrong. At 43-7/8, the shackle will almost be flat and pointed forward. if you measure right now, i bet you cant get 44" from front to up shackle pivot. Let me look at it in the morning on something bigger than my phone.
 
I was afraid of that. :doah: I had planned on going outside with a tape measure and messing with the shackle but everyone had gone to bed.

I also forgot to mention this is the hi lift jack I have, not sure if it's going to work to compress the springs but I will play with it.

Seems it's missing some pieces but it will go in both directions with a flip.
 
Yes I do, my buddy has 2 rated at 5000lbs each I plan on using the hi lift to compress the springs then strap the axle to the frame.
 
Maybe I should just stick a thin piece of wood in between the frame and compress the spring and mount the shackle that way. :thinking:

I'm eager to hear what KTM has to suggest tomorrow.
 
Take the spring pack apart, put the main leaf in only with bushings, install axle as normal (you will need a really short temp center pin). Make leaf flat (or to the designed and designated arch can be reverse if designed for it) with floor jack, see where back of spring hits. decide on shackle angle, cut hole or install shackle hanger in frame, double check yourself, put spring pack back together.

While you have the spring apart you can use the easy flexer to set shocks, bumps etc.

Your making this too hard.
