How does this make it stronger? Isn't to much welding in a spot make it weaker?

How big should this plate be? Should I shoot for about 4 inches on each side of the can?

you can go back and forth all day long with someone who knows alot about metal and welding about how much weld you should put where and if it weakens or strengthens it, or creates stress risers, or this that or the other.

What it boils down to is you are needing to put additional metal on top of others to make it stronger.

Both pics posted were pretty much done to make it look cool. You can just do a much smaller hole ( typically twice the thickness of the metal but I do just bigger usually) and grind it smooth and it will just look like a smooth piece of metal.

Some do big holes like that to get the strength and to lose a bit of weight but on a small plate its negligible. Which on a race truck is important but a trail street truck not such a big deal.

Yes the big holes with weld looks cool so thats what I would do :D:D
 
Plate 2 inches each side of the gussets. Rosset weld it with two slots horizontal behind the can and gussets. My take on it is, if you just plate it, and weld it to the plate, the plate can still pull away from the frame. With the Rosset welds, it can't pull from the frame.
 
Makes sense, would it be OK to arc weld? I got a buddy that days he can "lay dimes" and still penetrate good.


How would you add gussets behind the can? Little lost on that one.
 
O OK I understand now then lay those other gussets on the face of that covering it. This sounds like it could take a bomb and I like it.

I plan on doing the same thing, but yes drop the cans low.

Im so excited to start fabbing the mounts and hoops. Oh how I love to cut and weld steel :saweet::grind:

Just gotta get the expensive parts lol.
 
I have those mounts already, I thought Wade was saying put another brace behind those plates. or is that enough?

Actually wade, he bought the 12" bump cans, so I bet those mounts will work just fine :waytogo:

Just move the can into place and weld er up.
 
I thought he had 6". Everybody claims they have 12"s.

Couldn't resist. Sorry. Didn't see the 12" cans. You guys just post too fast for this old guy to follow the whole thing.

No worries, I bought the 12 inch bump can but about 4 inches will hang below the frame. What do I do to brace the extra length of the can that over hangs the frame?
