Meh 6L80s are garbage shifting and can't really be built yet to handle any decent power like a 4L60 or 4L80. I finally have a good trans tune on mine and I still think its crap.

It took some time to get used to it, but I loved the two I had. No way I would want a shift kit in one that hit gears though.

I don't have one yet, when this front end blows up I'll be looking at upgrading to one. Blowing up a 4L65E and a 4L60E makes me wonder if the proper trans is a 4L80E for this truck.

But you haven't "blown" either one of them, in regards to overworking or snapping parts from excessive torque. You have simply hit the end of life for the two you had (and that risk is one feature of reusing an old tranny). If this was a custom-built 6BT and you frequented the drag strip, I would agree on needing the 4L80. But you're not running excessive power/torque numbers.

Either tranny would be fine, but you already have this one, and it carries a lower 1st gear ratio than a 4L80 does. And given the history of this build, I think you're better off with a newly rebuilt 4L60 than you would be with another old tranny (even a 4L80). :deal:

Pulled this thing out from being parked for 2 years. We are planning on putting this and my truck on a trailer for blazer bash.

I was going to say something similar.

Ben,

The first year I owned my K5, there was a lot of clusterfock BS. Almost burned that bitch to the ground several times. Had the motor, tranny, and transfer case apart more than once each.

In the end, when everything was sorted, it was a good rig, lots of years of good use.
You can do this, it's worth it.

Agreed can't wait to have it working properly and trouble free.

Hard to believe the trouble you're having with this... good for you for not going postal yet!? Lol!

You will get there! Take it easy Ben!

Thanks, and yes I will get there!

Wait...what's the story here?

It's my buddy Jesse's it has been parked for 2 years has a tired 305 but it keeps chugging. Cleanest old blazer I have messed with before. We used to cruise it around during lunch breaks.

The statement about a 6L80 isn't true anymore. There are several guys running 6L80's in their buggies and specifically Ultra 4 cars, I want to say at least 5 to 10 of these are being used now. They are being built to hold up and shift well. 5 years ago the first couple guys were making a go at these and did struggle a bit, now that the work has been done there are ways to make these work well. It isn't cheap and easy yet but the stuff is out there.

A nice 4L60/65 shouldn't be any issue for you Ben, you think you beat your junk but you don't. Yes a 4L80 is better but if you can't afford to build one then you're going to be just fine with doing a 4L65.

I think my biggest struggle is bad luck with parts. I'm not in any shape to build a trans right now anyway.
